Skate West 2019 Grand Ave, West Des Moines, IA
Skate West 2019 Grand Ave, West Des Moines, Iowa was the most recent of the Muses Family rink to close. It closed due to the Great Virus Lockdown of 2020-21.
Skate West was one of the chain "store" that was a roller rink under the umbrella of the Muses owned Skating rinks. They included Skateland in Memphis, TN, Skate East, Skate North, Skate South.. All directions and this rink.
The Muses closed this rink on 16 March 2020. They closed permanently the same day the lockdowns occurred without giving a chance. That is my opinion. They could have reopened it.
Perhaps they wanted to focus on other rinks they own and operate. I do know that the Skate North which is now Skateland is still operational.
In 1963 John and Ramona Muse began their careers as roller skating rink operators at Ames Skateland in Iowa. Unfortunately, in 1968, Ames Skateland was destroyed by a tornado. After a few years of putting back money, John and Ramona built their first rink in 1972, naming it Skate West.
Later, they added Skate East, purchased Skate Country – renamed it Skate North, and added Skate South to their growing family business. Only Skateland (Skate North) and Skate South are still operational.
The Interior.
The original floor was polyurethane coated concrete but in 2010, they added beautiful Fan layout hardwood Maple floor, non-painted with of course, polyurethane coat for protection. It was the standard appearances on the wall at this rink as it was with other Skate rinks that the Muse family owns.
The Exterior.
It is a Free-Span Steel Trusses Cinderblocks - Walled Warehouse - like Building with Gabled roof. It was built in 1970 but the rink was built in 1972 as well as opened that year. The roof has high pitch which is good. Before they painted over the mural as they went out of business, they had a huge logo painted as a mural on the front wall facing the road. The building was in Light Gray color.
