Photos of Unknowns
There are several photos of unknown. Of course there are thousands of photos. There were several thousands of rinks since the world's first rink in 1860s. But some were popular or unique and they are in this group and with your help, it would be nice for you to answer where were those rinks. Slowly there will be several rinks photos to be added. If you know what rink, please state photo number from the page, "Photos of Unknowns" and I will post what was that. Usually they would be rinks out of business be listed. Some I can tell. You too.
In this very stylish Contemporary look of late 1960s-early 1970s roller rink. Bricks were very popular in 1960s to 1985. This tone of brick were common of that era which was more brownish or earth-tone bricks. Also notice that there were several things that are curved such as rails, the indoor garden, the cash register or office (inbackground) and the curved edges of phone booths, windows, and ceiling halo. Notice that there were so much brick? And the wood columns on the exterior rail of the rink (see lower left next tot he rink. The rink was clear it was light wood stain and polished. Noticed the skating floor has curved wood? The carpet looked different colors but it was not because of the lights from the ceiling. It appeared to be more yellow hue than green. Not avocado green but golden yellow with very slight green hint in the mix but also bit of burnt orange in also.
Side joke--sort of. How many people can you spot in this photo?
Ok, what is this interesting rink was this? Beautiful design. I just explained it what it was like. It really looks beautiful, really. Best looking one I ever seen and perhaps the most expensive in terms of how it built and appeared. Skating rinks normally do not have as this much space, brick, and the decor look at all. They could have filmed a movie or two in this place for sure. I would rank this number one best rink ever designed.
UPDATE! The Photo you see above has been found out today. Merely just a day for me to find out. I researched hard to find where that photo came from. It was featured in a magazine called Skate. I think they ceased publishing but they were all online now as archives. I found the beautiful rink! It is called Bonaventure Skate Center. Bonaventure is Italian word which is fitting for the rink meaning, "Good travels" or "Good venture" and now Bonaventure Skate Center is called Bona Venture Family Skating Center which they added other entertainment features on their property. It has a sister rink. Both rinks are STILL in operations. It has been updated twice as seen in photo gallery on their website and in the internet. Pretty much has been changed for the rink. They no longer have those beautiful carpet, gray grooved cinder-blocks on their walls and rails. They did not have the same position for that photograph. But basically you can see similar ceiling, that same curve ceiling and the railing. You can see the rail still sporting the grooved blocks. They painted all white now. This photo is actually their first updated before they updated again with white paints on the walls and glow-in-dark carpet. This carpet showed green color so it was perhaps carpeted in 1980s or early 1990s. It is still attractive though but updated look. Glad they kept the curved corners of window-box at the snack bar, skate shop (see in the middle of the original 70s look photo). The wording on there says "Skate Shop" It is still there. Perhaps the phones are not there anymore. Haha.
They have the 2nd updated (3rd version of the same rink) with the halo lights and wordngs on it in the middle of the rink! Echo of the orange halo as seen in the original 70s photo above. The first generation of decor was aimed for young adults because of the looks. Second generation was more neutral for teens and young adults but this generation, geared more toward children and teens. Each generation, the interior design becomes more for younger demographics. Next one will be very childish? Who knows. This rink did well with huge upgrades and updates compared to many skating rinks. Still, it is a beautiful rink. Still one of the best designed rink... so far.
Both photos are courtesy of Bona Venture Family Skating Center, 24505 Halsted Road, Farmington Hills, MI, Go check it out! Have fun! It is still open for business. Must be the design really got people attention and love to attend.
