Exposed ceiling, Skate park like look with Ice-Rink White rink painted over beautiful Maple wood. I love the original. Graffiti style art work on the wall. Sorry. Everyone has own opinion. Penn Skates 2210 High Tech Rd, State College, PA
Penn Skates was a rink on 2210 High Tech Road, State College, Pennsylvania that it was operational for more than 20 years. They opened in 2001. Their last skating session closed was at 4pm on Sunday, 17 October 2021.
Valerie Dench who was owner/operator of this wonderful rink retired and sold the building. That was the main reason.
“Although I will miss you all, I am looking forward to retirement,” Dench wrote. “I would love to see you again before we close and say goodbye.”
Besides they had roller skating, an arcade, and a concession stand, it has offered summer and day camps and private parties.
For the last half of the years (10 years), it was home for State College Area Roller Derby.
The Interior.
The original was beautiful with non-painted Polyurethane coated Maple floor with nice Royal Blue and White Cloud White walls. Some art work I see on there but cannot see it clearly. It was a Fan shaped layout for the floor as they had a huge movie screen size screen on one end. Music videos? I am not sure but I am sure for advertisement.
The updated version showed no more screen. It was removed and pained with PENN SKATES on that end. Panel Ceiling Tiles removed and new Disco Lights. Also Subway Lights along the wall where their "Graffiti" style of art work on the wall. This was given to appear like it was skaters skating in a New York City-style Subway. The original gave more a feeling of 1970s in 2010s feel. I do not know what the real original look like they first opened in 2001. But that look was excellent. Why change?
My opinion: Yes we all do need fresh look however, the direction for this with the mural giving too much like a Graffiti that can be influenced the wrong way. Why? Children will think it is alright to do that in the public after seeing it at the rinks. Many rinks started having this look in 1990s and I saw a large explosion of number of graffiti even in my hometown, Syracuse, NY. This is wrong. This is why I had to express my concern about the art work. If it was stripes, curves like you remembered the 1970s, that would work. If they had their own cartoon characters they came up with skates on, then that would work as well. Airbrush type of painting is a no-no because that is what troublemakers do on public infrastructures or even on private properties. If they wanted this, they need to paint their own homes or on fences on their own property and I am sure they get zoning officials come knocking. Try that.

Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
