White Gables Skating Rink 2336 State Route 131, Goshen, OH. Old Black and White photo of the rink. The building was painted White and it looked very store front like. This is showing just where the front door was. Unfortunately, I do not see any photos of the entire place when it was operational. You can see the window from the rear inside the front door, literally. Source: Newtonsville Historical Society.
White Gables Skating Rink 2336 State Route 131, Goshen, OH. Taken just 5 years after the rink closed. Not much decaying you can see in this one. Hard to see the roof falling apart in this photo compared to the next photo. I think there were leaks you can see on the left side of the building. Source: Google. October 2008.

White Gables Skating Rink 2336 State Route 131, Goshen, OH
White Gables Skating Rink was operating at 2336 State Route 131 in Goshen, Ohio. Earl Hopkins and his wife, Nellie owned and operated The White Gables Roller Skating Rink. Their typical schedule were -- Friday and Saturday from 7 PM to 11 PM and Sunday from 2 PM to 5 PM which was not much of a schedule week.
White Gables Skating Rink first operated before 1950s and then the Hopkins purchased in early 1950s till they could not operate anymore in 2003 and close it due to competition with new rinks opening around town and their place was getting old and needed repairs.
They said in Wikipedia that the building still standing however, when I got to see on Google, all I see are ruins. Yes, ruins like as if it was a Roman ruins-- no roof, crumbling down walls, things like that but there is a building right by it that still stands but when I look back on Google Map history, it does not look like that former rink. I checked!
According to Facebook, someone said it was Earl Hopkins's father owned the rink right up to the 1950s.
According to Xome, it said the building was originally built in the year 1900! If that was the case, the rink ran for 103 years! One of the longest ever. Only one left is in State of Washington still operating the oldest.
UPDATE! -- 03 May 2022.
I received an email from a Sharon who skated at this very rink. Interesting.
Here is what she has to say --
Yea, when it came to the guys I wasn't a "normal size" so I couldn't compete with the girls. I more or less stood at the entrance and talked to some guys I knew. I don't remember anyone telling the kids to get out of the door way. You would have had to turn sideways to get past.
When we 1st started going skating I believe there might have been 8 houses on Goshen Rd. My grandparents were the first to build a house, then after my Mom and Dad got married they built a house next door.
The Rink, They were the nicest people that worked there, Having out own skates we could go into the back to have them tightened, I remember there was wooden shelves just outside the "repair" room. T hat was where you could keep your personal items so they didn't get stolen, I don't think I need to tell you how that worked out. I remember the record player, Yes you heard that right. They would put a stack of 45's on and it would just keep on playing. "Hokey Pokey", got to be one of the corniest songs in history! Then they of course had the couples, and the kids a chance to skate, can't forget the backwards skate, you wouldn't skate backwards you would just change the direction. Friday and Saturday night was the busiest, on Sundays if I went that would be pretty much little kids.
My sister and I we would wear our skates home as we didn't live very far from the rink. If our Mom ever knew that she never let on. (Looking up) sorry Mom Smiling face with halo.
I haven't been roller skating in probably 40 something years, the last time I fell and cracked my tail bone. Had to fly back to Boston from Memphis sitting sideways.
I will always remember the days up there. Simple, fun. inexpensive entertainment.
Its not something a lot of people do these days so I consider myself very lucky to have been able to enjoy that!
I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to answer me, it really brought up a lot of fun memories.
Thanks, Sharon.
Wow, thank you Sharon, I know how that feel with the tailbone. Me, not skating but hurt it trying get off something. Ouch! Yeah. Wow, kids littering at the door?! Did you try to say excuse me? I think music was loud. Smart you had to walk sideways. Anyone tries today standing in the door is a fire hazard these days.
No kidding.
Hey Sharon, I am short too! I am merely 5' 2.5" without shoes on of course. In 1978.. I would say I was 5 feet even. Maybe 4' 11". You want to know something? I asked about at least 6 or 7 girls per session to skate with me. At least one per session did skate with me part of couple skates. Hard to talk with them because of music and because of just disco ball lights were on. I at the time, hard of hearing and difficult to read lips while skating in the dark.. But read about me in About Us page.
The Interior.
It had Dark Green wall with Hospital Green wall above the Dark Green. That combination of color appeared to be 1930s or 1940s. But from the photo, it appeared to be more recent. Maybe a paint over? Perhaps. Some of the skaters said it was Maple wood but one guy on Facebook said concrete. The majority said Maple so apparently it was laid with wood, not concrete. The photo of the abandoned building has shown it was rotten and unwalkable.
The Exterior.
It was a simple design with White walls, a few windows in a small building. It is said to be built in 1900! If they still took care of it, it would have been 121 years old building today! It was Segmental Arch building where the rink floor was and it had flat roof where the admission, concessions, and skate rental was. It was rather a small rink because you can compare it with a modern day pickup truck parked there in old Google Map. It had 5,180 Square Feet! The property was 60,113 Square Feet. That translate into
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A. Floor: Wood (likely Maple). Floor Layout: N/A.
Building Size: 5,180 SF. Built/Renovations: N/A. Demolished: Slowly by nature, collapsed itself. Still there though.
Type of Building: Free-Span Steel Trusses Steel - Walled Warehouse - like Building.
Roof: Segmental Arch (over the rink), Flat over off-rink area)
Acres: 1.3800 AC. (60,113 Square Feet)
Operated: (Overall)-- Pre-1950s to 2003.
Reason for Closure: Due to competition with new rinks opening around town and their place was getting too old and dilapidated beyond repairable.
Wanted: Information regarding exact dates of open/closed, why closed, size of rink, rink materials. Also photos/articles. Anyone knows or have photos, please let me know by emailing at [email protected]. Thank you.
