Bulmer's Sunbeam Roller Rink 830 Village Rd Smithfield, ME
This roller rink is a little bit unusual because it is on the shores along with all summer camps. It was called Sunbeam Roller Rink on 830 Village Road Smithfield, Maine. No kidding. Surrounded with camps at Sunset Camps. Most recent is called Bulmer's Sunbeam Roller Rink. That is named after the owners' last name. Recently in May 2022, it was up for sale.
NOTE -- They are not going out of business. It is up for sale. However, if next owner shut down, it gets shut down and we at Dead-Rinks are prepared with this to be listed in the Maine section of all dead roller rinks. However, it is in Alive rinks section. So, let you know it is STILL operational but up for SALE.
Back to this...
This wonderfully century old open air roller rink was built in 1925. It had seen history throughout the century.
It sits by the shore in Smithfield, Maine on the shores of The Narrows North Pond on the east side of the lake.
The property has two parts: The front building and the rear building. The front currently as a duplex (two families) that a landlord lives in one section, the other a rental.
In the rear building is the Sunbeam Roller Rink. It appeared to be beautifully care for.
They were built in 1922. However, Coldwell Banker said 1925. Perhaps it was the rink itself 1922 and later, the house which was originally a general store on ground floor and housing upstairs. Now the ground floor is a housing. Each floor has one bedroom. It is around 2000 Square Feet for entire house. That is small per floor. Total with the rink is 8,274 Square Feet.
The ownership have changed hands several times. Paul and Barbara Winegardner, who owned the rink in the late 1940’s and the 1950’s, and were responsible for the rebuild in the mid 1950’s.
The most recent are Matt Bulmer and Kathy Bulmer, family run.
UPDATE! -- 03 July 2022.
I got a message from the operators on Facebook. Here is what they have to say.
Matt and Kathy [Bulmer] operate the rink, Gary & Nancy Bulmer own the buildings and land. They bought and operated it from 1978 to 2008. The property is worth a lot and they are in their 70’s. They bought the rink from the Ireland family. The floor is unfinished maple. ~100’x50’.
The Interior.
Original may have not had colors on the wall. May have had natural look but they painted in more recent times with beautiful colorful sections between trusses.
The floor is Unfinished Maple hardwood floor that is sized to ~50' x100'.
It was Free span but I think lately they had to put posts up for support on the rink floor. Maybe temporarily. Or for off season because of the snow.
The Exterior.
I believe the rink building was rebuilt twice because of old antique photographs showed it was quite different appearances. Both are Gabled wood built but the original had Combination Roof design.
The photographs would do better at this description. They had three generations of this rink appearances.
I believe the rink was a rebuilt because for a hundred years old, likely it was a rebuilt or renovated.
The original had quite larger opening space on the wall for natural "air conditioning" and the newer ones are smaller and must open sides. In wintertime, of course closed and when sessions are over, they are closed.
It is no fun with flies and mosquitoes though considering this is in the East Coast where they both persist in the more moisture environment.
Of course the siding is Snow White. Truly matched to winter snow as I seen in photos. Currently with Aluminum Siding.

Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
