Skateland (Relocated), 4656 Commercial Street, Salem, Oregon
This rink had a history with the building. This is original location of the building for the rink and it was quite different on the exterior. Then it was sold in 1984 and relocate the building some 220 miles to Bremerton, Washington to become Bremerton Skateland. So, practically the rink revived as second life but at a new location. Well, that location just closed up in June 30, 2019 for good and it was sold to a trucking warehouse company next door after the owners had to sell because of several reasons. See Bremerton Skateland profile for more information. Please click the name.
This history of Skateland (South) began in Salem, Oregon back in 1966. It ran for 18 years at that location as part of 53 years of history of the Skateland building which was quite long.
Originally different than the rink at Bremerton which was really updated modern look on the exterior, this one truly showed 1950s-60s look of a 2-story shopping center like. Perhaps it was but I do not know because of lack of information about this building. It was two stories because of the stairs to second floor and had doors upstairs. It looked like two apartments upstairs by the look of the doors and first floor had two businesses as it appeared to be because of the distance between two sets of pairs of doors which indicate to me appeared to be two businesses. The rink perhaps was one and the other was for small business up front. OR could be entirely rink and one was admission and the other exit. I do not know what history with that building was as much.
Due to the photograph was in black and white, there is no way to know what it was like in color and the interior at the time. Pretty much perhaps similar to what Bremerton did with the updates. Perhaps the snack bar seating area had same seating as you can see in the photo in the Bremerton Skateland profile. This location was built in 1965 and opened in 1966 till the building and rink was sold in 1984 to be relocated once again. So this business ran lives in three location but this building twice.
Skateland had a history itself. Originally Skateland was in West on 650 7th St., West Salem, Oregon in 1955 but it was sold to new management which then changed that rink's name to Rolletime. But the same management of original Skateland in West Salem went to the Commercial Street location which you see in the photo above. Then sold it the owner who dismantled the building and brought the name along too to the Bremerton, WA location and Skateland continued till its demise in 2019.
See Rollertime for that history of the location.
