All four courtesy of Google Map. Noticed just sign changes. They even kept the happy guy on skates on the sign but change to Fun Galaxy.
Went from that 1970s toonish guy and contemporary stars and stripes of 1970s look to futuristic graying. Noticed the parking lot car stoppers have Americana colors? Now its all white. |

Skate-A-Round USA (#2) was a rink and was second rink for Skate-A-Round as #2. This location in Athens was opened in 1975 in time for the American Revolution Bicentennial Celebration. Oh well, the look inside and outside had no Patriotic American colors. But it was very simple modern 1970s design especially on the exterior.
I do not have more information on this other than the stats. They sold the rink in July 23, 2012 to current owners of Fun Galaxy for 342,400 USD.
Some people or even some websites spelled this rink as SkatearoundUSA. pretty much the same.
The Interior.
I have no idea what the interior was like for the original Skate-A-Round USA was like. But I can tell you the present version under Fun Galaxy. While their website is really very neat design, the interior matched very closely with the colors, decor, and the look. No happy bright colors like many other rinks would have. Instead of colorful wall section divided by the truss columns, this one is typical Black-and-White because the theme for this place is outer space, a galaxy. Like some rinks has or had their names like Skate Odyssey does.
It has Fan layout Clear polyurethane coated Maple floor with carpet surrounding. The carpet is Carpetiles. Of course, Medium Grey with Red. Reminded me of Skatetown USA rink with similar carpet and design.
But recently they redid the floor in the snack-bar area into 1950s style Black-and-White Checkers style linoleum flooring or tiles. It would be a lot easier to clean that way rather than the carpet and easier to be COVID cleaning certified. Like LEED for energy, I call that COVID Cleaning Certification.
Bunch of video games, and everything they have. Fun Galaxy recently renovated during the COVID Lockdown by redoing the floor by the snack-bar, the bathrooms.. I am sure a few more things.
Not only it is Black-and=White, they have bunch of Light Green as well. Real nice and love the Colors. It does remind me of a certain snowmobile brand with those colors. You know that, Fun Galaxy?
The Exterior.
The exterior pretty much is the same with that Red-Brick brick veneer all around the building with low pitch gable roof. That is a rare for 1970s and newer decades to have it entirely brick this way.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A Floor: Clear polyurethane coated Maple. Floor Layout: Fan with Roller Derby track outlines.
Building Size: 18,000 SF Built: 1975 Demolished: Still standing.
Type of Building: Free Span Steel Truss Brick Veneer Cinder-block Store/church-like Building.
Roof: Gable, low pitch.
Acres: 1.96 Acres (nearly 2 Acres).

Reason for Closure:
Skate-A=Round USA: 1975 to July 23, 2012
