Skatetown USA Family Roller Skating Facility was a good rink but its survival could not make it beyond COVID Lockdown of 2020 that forced Ken Roesel to close because of the too much burden to comply the new regulations for post-COVID reopening. It ceased operations by announcing for May 1st, 2020. Actually, they closed before that due to National lockdown in March. A month and half without an income, they folded. I feel for the owners and the family.
This rink had many skaters attended and looks like they were doing okay but I think there were other factors that hurt them. I do not know. Maybe expenses were eating up more than profit. That factor can hurt even a popular roller rink! Maybe it was a new rink not that old and the expenses.. you know?
When I looked up for the photos, I recalled this building LAST YEAR on LOOP NET! It is for sale for quite a while! The date on there says September 17, 2019. Apparently I was correct. They were trying to sell.
This building is not just a roller rink, but it was split business complex. A duplex. One side is roller rink, the other was some kind of gym. It is called Midwest Cheer Elite. Sounds like a Cheerleading center. That is quite rare a gym just made for cheerleaders. I might be wrong. Nope, I am not wrong. It IS a Cheerleading school. Rarely you find such a place.
They would even have other events there that are non-skating such as a local chamber of commerce show as I saw on Skatetown USA facebook page. They even took pictures of the facility.
Only the rink side went out of business and the cheering center is still operational according to their website.
The selling price is 2,995,000 USD.. WHEW! A lot of money!
The Interior.
It had very modern clean spacious feel of a rink. It had Bright Snow White colored wall all around the facility. But they had murals around the rink that is not one of those graffati. No way. It had more natural theme of shapes. Squares, triangles, and a ribbon through them around the rink. Very unique concept and I love that. I am sure many skaters enjoyed that relaxing feel at the rink.
Very modern, no craziness of black-light neon light carpets style of 1990s. It was carpet tiles and it was very standard. Gray! With some squares of different colors. Mostly Red as I can see in the photos. Very clean. It did not give the coldness there. Some other rinks I felt that but this one, I felt just right. This is the rink everyone would go to. No questions about that.
Half of the facility was for skating rink with huge off-rink area. They originally had high tables and chairs and leaving quite very spacious area. But the newer photos showed more of picnic tables and more people sat there. It did look like they were getting more business when they had those picnic tables and got rid of the high tables and high chairs.
One area was for arcade games. Very roomy that area as well as for lockers, and skate rental as well the front.
The rink side had popular white foam board ceiling panels but for the Cheer quad place, they had exposed Free-Span Steel Truss. Huge difference.
Speaking of the front, it was very different designed not like any other rinks that older rinks had more tight spot of entrance. The older the rink, the smaller entrance it was. Right? Well, this one was very spacious. Very open. They had a huge window display and they would show holiday decoration in there. Christmas, Halloween, etc.
This facility was more of multi-entertainment and convention center. Too bad they are closing because of the virus. This is a huge place which means a lot of work to wipe down.
The Exterior.
It was a typical Gable roofed Free-Span Truss steel walled warehouse-like building. It is huge.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A Floor: Clear coated Polyurethane coated Maple Floor Layout: Fan
Building Size: 57,000 SF Built: 2003 Demolished: Still standing.
Type of Building: Free Span Steel Truss Steel Walled Warehouse Building.
Roof: Gable
Acres: 5.59 Acres
Operated: 2003 to Friday May 1, 2020.
Reason for Closure: COVID Lockdown of 2020 affected financial hardship for the rink for a while. Is for sale since September 2019.
Wanted: Information regarding rink size, more information, etc.. Please let us know! Anyone has pictures and/or information please let me know at [email protected]. Thank you.
