Top three courtesy of Google Map. From top to bottom: November 2007 in Fire Red and White, October 2012 in Surf Blue and White (pretty bad day photo taken though due to fog?), and final is July 2019. It has Dreadful Black and Dreadful Gray. Yuck! The Graying of America.
Courtesy of Loop Net. Only photo of the front in the rear. Awful color! Nice palm trees though. Sure does mark the X, Mad Mad Mad Mad World! Haha.
Courtesy of Tom Retro as provided by Mark Carpenter. This is part one. I could not find part 2 and 3. But there is part 4. I love those diamond lights on the wall! Really cool! 4th one showed skaters dancing on the floor before switching to skating. Different size of crowd depending on what session. Dancing seem to bring out more people than skating.
Courtesy of Tom Retro on YouTube. This video is a memorial video in memory of all skaters and staff who passed away. And this page is dedicated to all of the skaters who went to this rink, both deceased and survived.
Savannah Skate Inn 3700 Wallin St., Savannah, GA
Supergoose Sports 3700 Wallin St., Savannah, GA (original home)
Supergoose Sports 3700 Wallin St., Savannah, GA (original home)
Savannah Skate Inn and Supergoose Sports were all there. Supergoose designated the rink as roller hockey which then they relocated to their city's civic center for more accessibility and seating I believe.
Savannah Skate Inn built and opened in September of 1981 till it was sold in 2001 to Supergoose Sports. After that, no information about that. Just that the possibility that Supergoose went Bankrupt in 2013 according to Mark Carpenter, the owner of Savannah Skate Inn in 1994 until he sold it in 2001 to Supergoose sports. It is now a furniture store. (Note: All information are updated). Thank you Mark Carpenter!
In June 2008, Food cook star Paula Deen was going to buy this building to make this into a warehouse but the banking issues did not work out and Paula had to withdraw her offer. She was going to convert into a warehouse and the Supergoose Sports already stored their things elsewhere. Never happened and I am sure the management for Supergoose Sports had to hold the sale of the building.
But Supergoose Sports moved to another location much later. In 2013. SS is now ice version.
Mark sold it for 750,00.00 in 2001 and Mark wanted to purchase it back in 2015 but the owner wanted 1.4 Million USD for it that just wasn’t worth it. Nope. And the neighborhood quality has declined as well. Mark said to me that it was not worth it. Smart move, Mark!
Mark Carpenter owned Savannah Skate Inn from 1994 until he sold it in 2001. The reason he sold it was because of teen problems once rink closed for the evening causing problems. The exact same problem for another rink facing the same fate at the time. See this link- WTOC for further details. Wow, Mark! Sorry you had to experience this. The story is happening with rinks and shopping malls of lately since 1990s. The same fate that movie drive-ins and drive-in restaurants faced in 1950s to early 1970s with violence, and loitering that scared away families from attending those drive-ins (movie and restaurant) according to Orange Roof and Golden Arches by Philip Langdon and other related genre books I own on fast food and drive-in restaurants.
Interesting about this rink Star Castle is still operational.
Whoa, read this! This rink was one of the 13 Skate Inn as a chain. Mark told me this in email. I paste this here what he said. And it is a public record because of what was going on. Please read why I said that.
Savannah Skate Inn was one of 13 Skate Inns built primarily in Georgia it was built by Monty Weatherup of Brooks, Georgia initially they were all built and leased out to a company called Rink Management. The owner went belly up and got in trouble by the IRS for tax fraud/evasion he disappeared and left Monty holding the bag. Over the next few years he was able to sell all but Griffin Skate Inn and Savannah Skate Inn and that’s how we operated for several years after that
-- Mark Carpenter in his email, August 27, 2020.
What else rinks I am missing here! Griffin Skate Inn is still operational but the other Skate Inn I have of same name as Savannah which was closed in Rome, GA (see Savannah Skate Inn). That Savannah had to close due to drugs and teens/children fooling around in there. It is now a storage facility. It makes me sad about rinks closing because of all the troubles.
The Interior.
It had concrete floor and during the time, there was 4 sets of diamond white lights. I can see they were very bright with clear bulbs. Flashing to the music beat. A rarity I see at any rinks I have done so far. It looks very Vegas with this appearance. My opinion and in fact, I love it! Open enter and exit from the floor except for both end of the rink it had half wall with carpet wrapped on it. Smart to make it softer impact for skaters rather than exposed smooth cinder-blocks. The floor had which looked like carpetiles. I am not sure.
The rink appeared to sit in center of the complex that you can walk all around it. Looks that way.
Orange Formica booth and tables. Carpets on the rails appeared to be in orange and brown colors. Since it was opened in 1981, it had 1970s decor apparently. With exception of carpetiles that replaced the carpet likely the same as it was on the half-walls.
The Exterior.
The building is a Gabled roof building with Cinder-block built with Steel sheet metal skirting around by the roof. What is odd is that this building's front is on other side, not facing the road but the parking lot which is in the rear of the building when you are facing the road. They have the entrance when you drive in to the parking lot it leads you toward the back and you are in the back part.
You are seeing the rear on the front facing the road. It makes it difficult to be inviting. Good thing there was a sign but after they were sold, it becomes a F-store (Furniture store), and here is the reason why the front is in the rear...here is Mark's comment in his email --
The Rink was basically built on wetland you could get away with that at the time that is why the parking lot is behind the building
It was cheaper to use fill dirt for close to the street for the building and remaining dirt for the parking lot because it didn’t take as much.
-Mark Carpenter.
Thanks Mark for the valuable information! Now it makes sense. Because I could not tell if that was a wetlands. Architecturally correct to design in this manner because you want rain water run off the parking lot into the wetlands and the foundation is bit stronger where the building had to be built. Much dirt! No rocks, Mark? Amazon in East Syracuse, NY is being built as another warehouse and this is on wetlands too and I saw last week at least 20 dirt trucks leaving with empty loads because they were filling in the wetlands. Central NY is pretty much wetlands. Big difference than the world's 2nd largest warehouse being built in Liverpool, NY (Town of Clay) upon of course, clay! So I understand!
