Roll R Skate 113 Cavasina Drive, Canonsburg, PA
Roll R Skate 113 Cavasina Drive, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. This roller rink was one of the unique architecturally because of its design on the exterior. It was very Contemporary looking design. It was a two-story building.
Floyd “Winnie” and Jan Shoup owned and operated the rink in a town outside of Pittsburgh. It was date stamped designed on 17 March 1977. Likely it was opened in 1978 and they closed in 1999. it was demolished. I did not like it was demolished because it was not that old!
They had their first annual reunion held at Valley Skate Center Denora on 05 September 5, 2010.
The interior design is quite similar to Valley Skate Center. Clearly because of the same ownership.
Floyd Shoup also owned Arena Roller Rink in Washington, PA. And two more Valley Skate Centers.
Back story...
Linda Miner's father owned a couple of rinks including he built one in Washington, Pennsylvania, the Arena Roller Rink in Washington, Pennsylvania. However, he lost that rink due to urban redevelopment (Eminent Domain?) and the Washington County Redevelopment Authority moved Floyd Shoup's business to the Roll-R-Skate rink in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. This forcing to relocate occurred when, "[i] was [during] the middle of the disco era and the people literally rolled in, especially during the weekends," [Linda} Miner said.
I believe he had the name changed from Arena to Roll-R-Skate because of the relocation.
The Roll-R-Skate rink was located behind the current McDonald's. The fast food restaurant features a statue of Canonsburg native Bobby Vinton.
"Bobby Vinton met his wife in my father's rink," Linda said. "(Years later), my mom and dad were at Bobby Vinton's Blue Velvet Theater in Branson, Missouri. He stopped his show and went into the audience and told the people how he met his wife in dad's rink."
Bobby Vinton later sang in her father's rink, which also attracted big bands like the Lombardo Brothers and singers such as Chubby Checker and Patty LaBelle.
Now back to this--
In a nutshell timeline, Floyd Shoup built the rink and then retired and gave the rink to his daughter, Marsha but Marsha passed away suddenly and her husband turned around and sold the business to other business.
There is an excellent drafting on vellum paper that someone owns and I could not get copies made. Because of that, her photos are not shown here either. I will have to do the drawing myself and figure it out. I will ask people which is the final rendering they used. It was shown both directions for the main doors.
Because of this, I apologize to you readers that the drawings of this roller rink are not shown. We do welcome excellent drafting and rendering papers being send to us and we will do professionally photograph it and size it on here for you to zoom and see the renderings and drafting papers. We also love to collect both drafting papers and renderings as well as storyboard (that is interior design samples on a board). Anyone has any drawings or drafting papers of any rinks, please email us first before mailing us. Contact us at emailing at International Roller Skating Rinks History Foundation©. Thank you.
Anyone has excellent pictures of the roller rink. Both interior and exterior, please do send it to us. We appreciate this.
The Interior.
Very modern 1970s/80s look however, it was not like that at first. It was all plain White 1970s trendy look that was popular at the time. The walls were repainted to look 1970s again time later. It was Retro look to maintain that 70s look. Truly revival in that concept.
I love the graphics. It was exact duplicate as it was in Valley Skate Center Donora. I am sure the other Valley Skate Centers were in similar design.
The font used was very futuristic. I recalled this font at the time which was frequented used at the time. It may have been Centauri Font or Incompleeta Regular Font but I am leaning toward to Centauri Font. Heavier (thicker) but closer than the logo for Centauri Font. Centauri is a futuristic font with minimalist, wide characters. But with this logo of ROLLER SKATING on the walls, it is not wide. It was Cubic. Designed by Tugcu Design Co. the font can be purchased in OTF format.
The Exterior.
It was very unique in design. Part of the building had very standard Steel-Walled Warehouse like with Gable roof but, there is a but! The other part.. above where admission is, it is

We do not endorse such illegal activities including breaking and entry of former rinks, malls, abandoned buildings, etc. Please always obey laws and regulations and property owner's signs. Some states allow purple paint on fence which means they even have guns on their property and have rights to shoot you. Please DO NOT attempt to enter property without permission!
For abandoned rinks, after you receive permission, do WEAR safety OSHA equipment including a safety glasses, pair of safety gloves, an orange vest or a jacket, and a construction helmet.
Thank you for understanding.
Dead Rinks is now International Roller Skating Rinks History Foundation© because many former names have become new names at the same rinks that are still active and due to much confusion, We have decided that International Roller Skating Rinks History Foundation© fits better for all rinks including defunct, closed, inactive, rebooted, and rinks that are still active today. For short on this site, it is International Roller Skating Rinks History© Bear with us as we change the entire site page by page each day. Thank you for understanding.
Second of all: The contents including words and photos above on this page and/or on any pages are purely educational entertainment purposes only. I provide what information from other websites, skaters, and operators and it may end up with different results between two (or more) sources. It is not our responsible for errors we caused. All sources are shown on each page. All opinions and statements of mine are also stated and are for purely educational entertainment only.
Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former. Since we are rebooted to allow alive rinks, active rinks, we welcome those active rinks as well. It will be described.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
