Both rinks, Arena Roller Rink and originally, Washington Roller Rink were held at 47 West Beau Street, Washington, Pennsylvania. In 1939, Operator Cecil Milam began Washington Roller Rink. Floyd Shoup began working at Washington Roller Rink for 15 years before he bought the rink from Cecil Milam in 1954. Floyd Shoup renamed it as Arena Roller Rink and operated until 1976. According to Billboard, Floyd began working at age 15.
Floyd operated the Arena Roller Rink for about 20 years before the Washington County Redevelopment Authority tore it down. A parking lot still occupies that space along West Beau Street. That was 1976.
But on 17 June 1946, Cecil Milam and Raymond Smith renamed Washington Roller Rink as Arena Roller Rink because of the renovation to add bowling alley. 8 lanes. Officially, the name was Arena Recreation Center.
The Washington County Redevelopment Authority tore the old beloved rink and bowling down and it is a parking lot and parking garage for a medical center next door according to both USGS and Google Maps as I compared.
The Interior.
Washington Roller Rink: It was originally only roller skating with Plastic floor sized at 57 Feet x 190 Feet. It made sense with the aerial photo on USGS that it was long, narrow building.
Arena Roller Rink: It was renovated to add 8 bowling lanes in the basement while roller skating remained on ground floor. They even had two ping-pong tables which was very unusual for this entertainment center of its day. Usually Billboards are set up. Not Ping-Pong.
They were going to have a new Maple floor but because of shortages of materials, they could not get a new floor among new building materials. They were not available so they had to reopen the rink anyhow with many things missing.
13,000 Square Feet of floor.
The Exterior.
Washington Roller Rink: It was originally only roller skating. However, the Colonial style building as I have compared to other neighbors on that street and blocks, It does appear very old. I have no idea of actual built. May have been way before the rink was first opened. The stone wall were in Yellow according to the two postcards.
Arena Roller Rink: The exterior was the same but new signage to add the word bowling. There was a separate door just for those going in to bowl.
The Stats:
Main Rink Size: 57' x 190' (13,000 SF) Floor: Non-pained, Plastic coated. Floor Layout: Standard.
Practice Rink Size: 57' x 190' (but no center since it is an O-ring like balcony) Floor: Non-pained Hardwood Maple. Floor Layout: Likely Log due to the layout of the balcony around. (dancing was on the balcony too).
Building Size: N/A. Built: 1939? Renovations: 1946 to add bowling lanes and games.
