Both courtesy of Google Map. The top one was made before Oliver's company put up a sign on the corner wall. They also added an awing on the right of the building (see where a car and a van parked).
Gayety Roller Rink, 7411 South Dixie, West Palm Beach, FL (3rd)
Gayety Roller Rink, 3001 Tuxedo Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL (4th)
This rink was third rink that the one of the sisters opened. Reba Chalfonte and a new addition to ownership were Mr. and Mrs. W.D Keeter. They opened the Gayety Roller Rink. The rink opened up in 1948 and ran until its demise in 1963. The rink was on 7411 South Dixie in West Palm Beach, Florida. You would not find the building because it has long since demolished. It is now a small modern corner shopping plaza, the Palm Coast Shopping Center. There is no photographs for this rink unfortunately.
Only Reba Chalfonte opened the final relocated rink and ran till her death because there were no family members to inherit. She had no family survivors. Her sister Irena passed years before.
Will need photographs, actual date of open, closed, and more information. Any of you been to this very specific rink, not to be confused with the other Gayety rink on 3001 Tuxedo Ave in West Palm Beach?
Nothing much about do with this rink. There were neighborhood where people lived at the time when the rink first opened, it was directly cross street from the rink's rear. It is understandable when you look at Google Map, you will see the houses behind the plaza today. It was quite close. It made sense why they needed to reduce noise as said in a Tuesday March 1st, 1949 article in The Palm Beach Post newspaper. This is why many rinks prefer to be opened more of a distance from residential area just like any other night life would do.
Requesting for photos are needed so it can be helpful especially why the noise. Did they have a fence? installations?
Well, they closed the rink in 1963 to built their final rink, the Gayety rink on 3001 Tuxedo Street in same town. They were forced to close the original Gayety to make room for the plaza and built their modern final rink.
The 3001 Tuxedo location was once again that arched similar to the Nissen Hut but it was not. It had exposed thick beams supporting the roof ground to ground arched. One another location had this exact same architecture was my high school where I graduated from. The gym and theater section had that arched dome architecture. There is a name for it but cannot find it. Only Reba ran this rink. It is Quonset Hut with exposed steel beams arched. My old high school gym has that design. Very similar.
The final rink was quite modern for its time. In fact, it was built in 1963 and my high school built similar design around the same time. Quonset Hut style.
The original color is unknown but presently, it is yellow above the roof-line and red on the walls. It had walls on all 4 sides because of the design of the arch roof does not extend to the ground. Only strong arched beams are placed.
