Courtesy of Fulton History/The Syracuse Standard, Thursday May 14, 1885. A tournament held at Criterion Roller Rink at James and McBride Streets. Neigbhoring rink, Alhambras was mentioned in the polo tournament as Casinos Rink did played. Other two were likely team names, not rinks' name. This is what it was like before roller hockey and now popular Roller Derby do.
Criterion Roller Rink James Street and McBride Street, Syracuse, NY
Criterion Roller Rink was a rink during late 19th Century but having no idea exactly when and where but only based on ONE advertisement for a tournament. It did not say what city. Like Alhambra was in the ad, it did not say what city that rink came from either but the clue of James Street and McBride Street made logical sense that it was merely a few blocks from Alhambra! Back the day, rinks and dance halls were practically close as you see with fast food restaurants do today. A McDonalds and Burger King practically cross the street or next door in Anytown, USA. The same with Lowes and Home Depot practically next door or cross the street in Anytown, USA.
This was the case with Criterion merely blocks from Alhambra. Problem with that was there is no other information regarding this lesser known rink. I will find out as time permit as I work on other rinks.
If that was the case on James Street in Syracuse, NY on North Side, the exact corner is unknown. More than Half of the buildings on those 4 corners are too new and other two buildings are multi stories apparently looking like apartment complexes so they are not the ones. So, that makes it all difficult. For now, I am guessing it is the corner where the 518 James Street building is currently unless it is where the parking lot cross the street next to a former church building which is on the corner of James Street and Townsend.
It appeared it was operated by Athens Roller Rink Company, the owners of Criterion Roller Rink. F. F. Beyhart was the manager at the time the tournament played in May 1885.
