Google Map of the location. As you can see the empty property, that was the actual location of the Casino. The brick building to the left was built immediately after the former rink turned to factory burned down. Part of the property of that building sits on where part of the Casino used to be.
The Casino 289 West First Street, Oswego, NY
Let not the name confused you. The Casino was the name of the roller rink in 1880s and 1890s. Many rinks of 1800s were not named as "Skating Center," "Skating Rink," or even "Arena." It was plainly called, "The Casino." The Casino was a rather large rink with wooden floor, likely.
There are no photographs of the rink externally or internally. However, there are photographs showing newer buildings and an empty lot. But those twenty years in the ending of the 19th Century, they had a skating rink. After it was closed in 1902 when it was sold to a candy manufacturer. before it was demolished dated before likely 1905, it became castle-like building for the Oswego Armory and the addition behind the "castle" which looks more like a rink/armory. Oswego ran the Armory until 2004 which now houses the YMCA for their fitness and activities.
The building which was unique in post-rink on that site is now registered as historical site (since 1988). The modern candy facility burned down in 1970s which was on the empty lot on the corner between Utica Street and West First Street next to the YMCA complex. That property recently sold to Taco Bell for a Taco Bell restaurant. The rink was really on the entire property where the historical site YMCA building that State Architect George L. Heins designed and where the factory was located before it was burned down.
History of the building by means of photographs might be lost. Any one who has photos, please notify me. Thank you!
