Cornwells Roller Skating Center 2350 Bristol Pike (Rt.13) Bensalem, PA. Close up of the former rink. The design reminded me a little bit of Modell's. It does feel like a department store rather than a grocery store. Interesting to note that they had steps. Grocery stores never really have steps. Not since General stores back in pre-1930s. Cornwells Roller Skating Center 2350 Bristol Pike (Rt.13), Bensalem, Pennsylvania. This rink is a sister rink to Concord Roller Skating Center in Philadelphia. It was operated by Lou, Pete, and Teddy Lesca.
Originally, the building was a grocery store however because of the new Acme grocery store opened nearby at Woodhaven Mall around 1972, this grocery store went out of business and became roller rink. Likely that was around mid-1970s.. Likely 1975 because of the Cornwells 30 Club had their anniversary glass mug stating the date as 1975 to 1990 as 15th anniversary. .
They operated the rink till 2009. Then they closed for good and sold to the charter school next door that they wanted to expand their school. They kept the Segmental Arch. I believe it was Bowstring-Trusses from what I see. The school renovated in 2010 and opened in 2013 to new classes for their students as expanded the school due to growth.
They repurposed the building into a school. They had Maple wood floor that was torn out. All this according to the I Skated at Cornwells Skating Center Facebook group.
Interesting to note that Rolling Thunder Skating Center had ownership of this rink according to Hometry website. Did they change the name or kept the name till the rink demise? That is a good question.
The Interior.
They had Maple wood floor at the time. They were not painted any colors. It was lay as Log Cabin format. When they rink closed, the skaters had ripped out skating floor into pieces to remembered where they skated.
The walls were stripes with Maroon or Deep Wine Red and the carpet on the wall was also of the same color with White paint background. Watch the videos and you will get the idea.
The Exterior.
Free-Span (likely Bowstring) Steel Trusses Cinderblocks - Walled Arena - like Building with Segmental Arch Roof. The colors really reminded me of Captain Marvel (Fawcett/DC comics) and his young counterpart, Billy Batson who wore Red sweatshirt with Yellow Trim. They had Bold Captain Marvel Red and Captain Marvel Yellow that scream the famed comic book character's colors.
Having said, those colors really can attract skaters to go skating at the rink. The closure and turn into school grounds baffled me why the rink closed? Anyone know why they closed?
Back to the comic book colors. Did the operators of the rink decided those colors because of the popular children's Saturday morning SHAZAM!/Iris Hour and the rebooted comic books that brought back the popular super hero? Perhaps. But who knows. It may have been coincidence.

Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
