The Barn and later, Bibb Skate Arena were roller skating rink in Macon, Georgia for 60 long years. Mike Skelly’s family owned for that long. Apparently maybe two generations. But it was sold to Anthony Hernandez who renamed the former rink as Monarca Ballroom which ended roller skating.
But first, it was Silver Blades Ice Skating Rink! It was operated by owners named Crawford brothers, who were known as real estate investors in Bibb County. But they had to sell the ice rink because of bankruptcy. Then the rest is history as it was a roller rink then now, a venue.
UPDATE! -- 24 July 2022.
I received an email from Mike Bone who wrote a 5 page article on this rink which is very detailed and you can read the entire story with this link here.
This is quite interesting and some of the article is highlighted onto here with revision and quotes edited and in italic to note that it is Mike Bone's.
Thank you, Mike, for wonderful 5 page article you wrote. Very detailed! Very impressed and notable on this site!
Here are some of what Mike wrote and again, brief, main points for this site. For longer explaination, please click the link. It is now in PDF format.
In 1956, Franklin Pierce Davenport purchased the Silver Blades Ice Rink since the rink was in bankrupt. He purchased it for less than $20,000. FP Davenport did not want to keep it as a rink so he melt down the ice and sold the pipes that kept the rink frozen for scrap. FP Davenport convicted his
Two people--Helen Davenport Skelly who was the sister, and Franklin Pierce's nephew, 16 year old Michael Skelly’s mom, both thought of laying hardwood Maple flooring to become a roller-skating rink. “The Barn.” Mr. D may have given location this name, the Bibb Skate Arena, but everyone I knew called it “The Barn”. (My opinion, it sounds like people prefer to be calling that The Barn because of both the nephew and the mom thought of that name and they perhaps were friendlier and nicer and perhaps sided with them rather than Franklin Pierce's name. I perhaps would say the same by calling it The Barn.)
Mike Skelly and his family ran the same rink under two names. Twice, Mike put the property up for sale. Maybe more.
Just three years before Mike Skelly sold the rink, he had it leased to Leslie and Tim Johns. Interesting about that Tim and Leslie met each other 30 years prior at the rink.
UPDATE! -- 01 July 2022.
I just received an email. Here is the information on this rink. Thanks to Florence who wrote me this email.
The original skating rink [The Barn] was owned by Pierce Davenport and his wife Martha Davenport back in the late 50’s [to] early 60’s. Mr. and Mrs. Davenport lived above the rink floor in an “apartment” at one end of the rink that had long windows facing the rink. As you walked in the front door their apartment was on the right upstairs. It was huge! He kept the “draw” curtains open so he could watch the rink.
(Was it he can watch for trouble makers?)
I remember he drove a tan vintage Mercedes-Benz. His wife and my mother were best friends. My mother was an avid skater as were all of us 4 kids. We grew up in that rink and started skating from the moment we could walk. There was a “beginner’s” rink that we all learned to skate in. I remember having the most awesome Halloween parties there every Halloween. We also had monthly “sock hops” where we had a live band. They were called “sock hops” because you could only get on the rink floor in socks. NO shoes were allowed. We would dance until midnight. No cell phones then, no Facebook, no Twitter, no Tik Tok.
Thank you for the information. I stand corrected regarding the no cell phones, no any social media. Rinks need to do that. All including amusement parks, mini golf, bowling alleys, theme parks, everything. Except for home. Even employment such as offices, businesses, etc. Employers would want you to work, not chat. Hmm?
Our social media was getting dropped off by older siblings or your parents and skating with your friends. Those were awesome memories. I wish kids knew about that today. How much fun we had. No drama, no complications, no fights. Thanks for helping me bring back those wonderful memories with my friends. Thanks for sharing your dead rinks webpage.
Sadly how the rink have declined attendance. Toward the end, they had 50 to 60 attendees in one session. That would be 100 less than ten years before that. That would be about 150 to 160 skaters a night.
What sadly the Johns said that if those 100 came, 60 would be sitting at the table on the phone all sessions. This is why I recommend rinks NOT to have WiFi at all except for office. Just turn the computer off at 5 PM during the week plus WiFi turned off then have sessions at 6 or 7 PM. No problem. This would make children either skate or talk in person rather than texting each other or secretly watch a movie that they are not supposed to be watching! Or something bad.
It is time to ban phones in many places. I would. My opinion.
Some rinks only had very strict dress code. But some rinks had Christian codes and this very rink had their own version of The Ten Commandments. It was hung in the office by the admission for both skaters and staff to see. This is what the Ten Commandments was like at the rink. No, not word for word from the Holy Bible in Exodus chapter 20 said. It was painted. It was created by Mr. D as many called him:
1. Don’t let your parents down, they brought you up.
2. Stop and think and you won’t drink.
3. Be smart, obey, and you’ll give orders yourself one day.
4. Ditch dirty thoughts fast, or they’ll ditch you.
5. Show off driving is juvenile, don’t act your age
6. Pick the right friends to be picked for a friend.
7. Choose a date who is fit for a mate.
8. Don’t go steady, unless you are ready.
9. Love God, surrender 100% to Jesus.
10. Live prayerfully and carefully, the soul you save will be your own.
Enough said, this set of Commandments should be set for every rink. We sure need that. And stores too. Everywhere!
In 1969, Michael Skelly received The Barn as a gift from his uncle Franklin Pierce Davenport with one instruction and that was, “you take it”.
The Skellys organized roller hockey and roller derby at the Barn. “Mr. Mike” and his wife “Mama Joyce” owned the rink, lived in the rink and ran the rink for 45 years, until its recent sale. They did lease it to another local family to run for 2 years. Other than that 2 year period, the Barn was under the control of the Davenport/Skelly family.
What interested me was this: The Skellys had their own set of rules for skaters just like the original version Mr. D had.
“Dress Rules, casual dress clothes.
No Hippie Junk, Beads etc.
No Military shirts or jackets.
No sleeveless shirts MEN.
No bear midriffs LADIES.
All skaters must wear shoes.
Any person creating a disturbance on these premises will be prosecuted.
No exceptions.
The management.”
The Interior.
This building had sections and the main attraction was the rink.
The building included a 2,000 square feet living area with 2 bedrooms and 2-full baths, kitchen, great room with a fireplace and sun-room upstairs. They are called owners' houses. They also had a lot of storage spaces.
The walls interior by the rink showed three main colors: Forest Green, Red, and Yellow in repetitive pattern of colors. Low pitch ceiling white panels Very simple design interior.
The original floor built in 1956 was Hardwood Oak and it was set as Straight layout from end wall to end wall which made skating louder on each end of the rink sounding like a washboard "music". But a few short years later.. in 1962, the rink was closed for renovation to re-lay the floor into Rotunda which apparently the staff, owners/operator got tired of hearing the noise at the ends and skaters too (my humble opinion. They closed to make it quieter. Good choose to make it that way. Wood floor was only 6 years old. About 1/8th of its entire life of a roller rink floor. Plenty of time.
The Cincinnati Flooring Company was responsible for laying this Oak Rotunda floor. I am sure they only focused on the rink floor from the original floor and curve it.. Not much to purchase new replacements and kept the original floor in the middle intact.
They perhaps used White Oak which Janka Mar Hardness of 1360, not far from Michigan Maple which is merely 1450 (popular and common used).
Originally, it had no air conditioning. Not until After the Hurricane hit the town. It was Hurricane Alberto hit town in July 1994.
The apartment had 2 bed, 2 baths.
The Exterior.
It was an old school style Steel Walled two story building with Segmental Arch roofline Each section does not look matching because Those three sections are of different roofline, height, and the appearance of itself.
The center section is the highest of the three. It has Segmental Arch roof at the highest while the left side is second highest which appeared more Gabled.
I do not know what color it was when it was called, "The Barn" but as Bibb Skate Arena, they had 1950s Baby Blue walls with Silver Metal Aluminum colors. But when they updated few years back, they had painted where the blue was into Solid Forest Green.
