All of Google Maps. Top view showed where the rink was. It was actually closer to the bank which is on the left of about all pictures.
Wheels & Thrills Roller Rink 207 Belleville Ave., Brewton, AL
Wheels & Thrills Roller Rink was a rink once at 207 Belleville Ave., Brewton, Alabama. It closed some time ago according to Google Map and that building as demolished. Three buildings actually were demolished and one being the rink itself. According to Bizapedia, it first registered on March 8, 1980 so for sure, it was opened sometimes shortly after that. The building were demolished according to the article in Brewerton Standard in February 2013. However, that was not the case of when the rink closed. it was the building being demolished on that block along with two others adjoined with.
You see, before the rink it was The Fair Store which then closed in 1970s then the rink opened in 1980 for the entire decade of the Eighties. Then pretty much it was empty then the 1990s to its demolished in 2013 were noted. The bank owned the final 5 years right up to the clearing of the property. It was a no coincidence that the bank that owned the property is right next door.
The Interior.
N/A. Likely from the view of the building, the rink was rather small and narrow. Based on the photo with this SUV which is about 185 inches long and I measured with perspective, I came up with about 38 to 40 feet wide. so the floor has to be about 38 feet wide--very narrow!
The Exterior.
Free-Span Steel Truss Brick-walled Store-front style Building. Red Brick however, many of the brick sections were unmatched to rest of the wall on the side. May have had patched up jobs on parts due to windows or cracks. The building in the photo is the left part of the three parts that were demolished. The former rink part was demolished first as they worked from the bank side to a current occupied building on the right according the article. The exterior to me in my opinion was very unattractive. One of the worst I ever seen. What are those array full of vertical rectangular thingy on the wall and on door frame and the door matched to the color. If that was the rink's appearance, terrible. No offense but hopefully that was put up after the rink because 1990 was so long ago. 30 years ago (Written on 2020).
The front brick color were Washed White Red Brick color while next door which was also empty was in 1960s Orange Brick. And the 3rd section that was demolished was Marble White color. That building looked good but they demolished it anyway. There is a parking lot behind and this was perhaps skaters parked there back then because of the street parking was limited. This section the block of town does feel homely though with beautiful bank front (and the rear showed a second story apartment to it with exposed Red steel beams and posts which makes it feel like it is their version of "Armory Square" feel to it. They are in fact seem trying to preserve early 20th Century in this section and perhaps why they demolished a 1950s-look of those 3 sections of building to focus on other part with a center as a "city block park" They could have improved better by putting a X-shaped sidewalk with benches and garden there. Maybe some bushes and flower plants instead of being too miminalist with the park having squared C-shaped layout of trees planted. They could have planted 8 trees, 2 per section for the X-shaped sidewalk. My opinion.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A. Floor: N/A. Floor Layout: N/A.
