Uline Arena 1132, 1140, and 1146 3rd Street, Northeast, Washington, DC was once a roller rink besides a colissum/arena. Today it is an office and retail center total remodeled in 2015.
So now back to this, I have to make profiles a different way to secure this so that you cannot take it away and I will have to store it differently. And is on Dead-Rinks as well. Understand?
Ok, Uline Arena began 1938 by Migel J. Uline and named this arena after his name. This began a very wealthy history of this arena and later, as Washington Coliseum.
Already by 1940, as it was still under construction, it received criticism due to the design layout of the seating. There was a concern but the architect said it was even out. 6,500 and 7,000 basketball fans including 4,500 to 5,000 highly desirable seats on the sidelines. This means more people on the sidelines than ends of the court.
It opened on January 28 1941 with Ice Capades and followed with many activities including basketball, boxing, a rodeo, and more.
They had roller follies as well. They had more to do with ice skating including the Capades, the minor league hockey team, college hockey games.
FDR had his 60th birthday at the Arena.
After the War, professional basketball was played at the Arena.
On February 22, 1958, Michael Uline died at the age of 83 but his will was contested and bitter because of his legal marriage and illegal marriage. This brought controversy between the Ulines.
Harry G. Lynn purchased the Arena on December 17, 1959, for $1 million but he had no experience in ice business or entertainment venue, losing money.
n 1960, Lynn renamed the building the Washington Coliseum as he assumed ownership.
On February 11, 1964, the famed Beatles played at the Coliseum. So were few other huge names such as Bob Dylan and the Temptations.
The Temptation concert was marred by a riot that night. But later, in 1967, the Coliseum was housed as a detention center where they can process arrested 600 hippies and anti-war protesters merely just for three days.
Even it was further surrounded with riots, civil rights speeches of the 1960s and 1970s.
It faced decline after the opening of another venue, Capital Centre in suburban Landover, Maryland in 1973. So, before that new venue opened, just three years prior, Harry Lynn had proactively sold the Coliseum. Each one really made it declined. After sold, it became a Christian center for a church and then it was sold to a trash company which would literally trash inside as a transfer center.
But the waste management company wanted to demolish it however, people were quick to registered as historic landmark so they had to sell it instead. Today it is a retail and office center.
I found out this place had roller skating but mostly it was ice. I am sure they did set up for roller skating including roller follies. It was not clear about this place but I thought I add this because of if they did have a roller rink, then I am registering this as a dead rink.
The Interior.
Originally as a coliseum/arena to have about 7000 fans watching an event, it was a sporting venue stadium and people would watch hockey, wrestling, basketball, Ice Capades, roller follies, and I am sure people did ice skate and roller skate there as well.
The arch really made it big inside not to have any columns supports. This Half-Barrel roof made the difference.
The Exterior.
It was D-Roof/Half-Barrel Arch Steel-Trusses Arena complex with Red bricks. It is a beautiful complex that sat next to above ground rail system which was perfect location at the time for patrons to attend an event or to skate. Next to that building was an ice factory. Very limited parking spaces surrounded the building. Today it is all repaired and use sidewalks making people to park on the street.
