Before Rockford Skate Co, there were two names that were associated- The Tree which was first followed by Spectrum Skate Centre. Yes, spelled with Centre. They were on 3209 North Main Street, Rockford, Illinois.
The Tree opened in the early-mid 1970’s. but still operating as Rockford Skate Co. When The Tree was open, it was operating until around 1984/1985. It was owned by Hollywood Dining Center, a local restaurant chain.
In around 1984/1985, the business was bought by two families, the Jennings and the DiMarios. It was rebranded as Spectrum Skate Centre. It was this until the early 1990’s when Adolph Wacker bought building and business and started Rockford Skate Co. That rink is still in operation but it has new owners in the past few years. During the Tree and Spectrum tenures the floor was concrete with epoxy. Adolph switched it to wood which remains that way today.
According to Dun and Bradstreet, it was 1998 that Adolph bought and operated the Skate Co. So, it was in ball park between early 1990s and 1998 when Adolph Wacker purchased the rink..
Interesting side note. The location of the rink is behind Main Plaza and behind another building which was a bar everybody knows-- Cheers! yes, Cheers of Rockford. Cheers had a small chain around the country because of the famous popular TV program, Cheers! starring Ted Danson as Sam Malone. (I agree with Norm that Sam's girl is the bar, not the women). Anyway, Cheers (of Rockford) is gone and now it is a roadhouse there.
Well, as they say.. Cheers!
The Interior.
I do not have any photographs of the Tree and Spectrum Skating Center. But in this modern carnation, it is beautiful interior. It does give a little bit of Halloween-y vibe with a couple of other colors thrown in the mix. Very clean design because it has stripes and sections in certain color. It gives very roomy feel. Not busy design at all.
The previous design I saw on Yelp with too many kids.. well, it had festive appearance on White wall.
The original floor was Concrete! It was not until Mr. Wacker replaced it with Maple wood which is still in use today. Non-painted, just epoxy or polyurethane coated on Maple. Looks beautiful there. For sure this place in this generation would have high scores on interior design.
The Exterior.
I do not know what colors they were when it was The Tree and Spectrum. But this time, it has Royal Blue and Medium Warm Gray as you can see in the difficult photo (funny, no close up photos! Just from a distance on Google Map). It does look very clean appearance and attractive peaking through two plazas in the front.
