The Skating Rink, 1403 17th St. SE, Watertown, SD
This is one of more unusual name for a rink because it is very plain name. No person's name, no formal name such as Skate World, Skateland, Roller World, etc etc. Just The Skating Rink.
This rink was the 4th roller rink in sequences in Watertown, South Dakota as I noticed in my research and according to Lindsay Schwinger. First was Spider Web I, then Spider Web II, then Mr. G Skate Inn, then The Skating Rink. Spider Web rinks were also very unusual names too. Clearly Watertown has very creative people. The newest rink there is upcoming Crazy Sk8 Rink.
The rink was open in early 1990s. No year was given unfortunately and no information seen online but only through my source. However, the rink closed in 2004. What surprised me that the new owner of this business that owns the building now still have the exterior in a certain hue of Blue with the Roller Skating shadow still stuck on the wall after the sign was removed. Now some company small sign is over the name of the rink.
You can see the old sign still on the wall on Google Map. Sorry no interior photos available.
There was original owners of this rink then it was sold to new owners and really changed everything including moods according to a source. Said to be from nice looking inside then the new owners added cartoons and more childish which likely aliened faithful patrons at the rink to depart. People even tried to help the new owners what needs to be changed and whats not. But the stubbornness really hurt the rink. Then because of stubbornness, skaters said they would leave and left which hurt the rink for good.
