Courtesy of Google Map taken in 2011 and 2014. The transformation occurred in 2012. Long before 2011 photo was likely the home of Sweet Ruby's. Big enough to house a rink there. Likely was free standing. It did look depressing in the 2011 photo but wow, real nice looking in 2014. I think the sunlight really made that difference. Nice timing Google! haha. The expansion really showed because of the stairs to the subways in front of the fitness center.
Sweet Ruby's, Myrtle Ave and Wyhoff, Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY
Sweet Ruby's sounds very romantic place to be. Although small rink but big on skaters because when they see Empire or another rink nearby is packed, they would go to Sweet Ruby's to skate. It was a rink even the narrow small rink. Bill Butler gave lessons there.
The location is unknown due to the way address was given online. To my educated guess, it might have been at 29 Wyhoff Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. It does show pretty big for such a building when I pinpointed Myrtle Ave and Wyhoff Ave and that is the result. It is now houses at least 2 to 3 businesses including a pharmacy and a bingo hall as said in 2011 but totally gutted as in 2014 Google Map. In 2012, they were remodeling into new tenants and new look as they expanded the complex. They added windows in more recent times. The fitness center took over the old pharmacy as oddly, a different pharmacy took over the old Bingo hall! Haha.
It did not matter for skaters with the size of the rink and just had to know how to skate and stretch when you are skating at that rink. In fact, someone who emailed me about Sweet Ruby's that I missed out last month. She is a tall female at 6' - 1" and her skating partners were taller than her!
I do not have much information on opening but it closed in 1980s. Sorry I do not have exact date of closure.
What else I can see was that it had a neon light sign with the name, "Sweet Ruby's" on it.
Sure does sound like a cute rink that many skaters enjoyed!
