St. Matthews Roller Rink 113 N. Sherrin Ave,, St. Matthews, Louisville, KY. This article was written likely in late 1950s because of the attire seen in the picture. No date provided on Facebook for this article. And I do not know what newspaper it was. Sure does make my job harder to do. Anyone? St. Matthews Roller Rink 113 N. Sherrin Ave,, St. Matthews, Louisville, KY. Advertisement likely full page of the newspaper. Unfortunately, date is not known and second of all, the person who has this posted blacked out the coupon! Should not do that because we want to see what it was like! St. Matthews Armory Roller Rink 113 N. Sherrin Ave,, St. Matthews, Louisville, KY
St. Matthews Roller Rink and St. Matthews Armory were at 113 North Sherrin Ave,, St. Matthews, Louisville, Kentucky. The list above is listed in order of date of operations, not alphabetically in order. They operated. Maybe all were just one and the same. Just spelled differently.
The Facebook post showed this article but did not have a date of when it was first opened. That was vial information required for any historian to post on Facebook. Unfortunately, this gentleman in that group failed to put a date on the article. Only the advertisement with a coupon was dated.
Col. Robert Bell was the operator of the rink at the Armory where the military personnel and vets usually meet at. Col. Bell was the Commander of the National Guard at this armory where they held the rink.
George Parker was the manager of the rink. The article did state that about 80 to 90 people attended per session average with the cost of 50 cents admission and skate rental cost skaters 40 cents. Image today admission is 12 USD Dollars and add skate rental at 12 Dollars? Woo. Expensive! That is why rinks are giving you a lot of love to save you 8 Dollars on the rental. This is hypothetical cost if it was the case.
Another manager was Joe Gough as seen in an ad. Date for that ad is also missing.
But still those 90 skaters came to skate on a real small rink.
It was started to curb juvenile delinquency. Remember, no cell phones, no Pong game from Atari yet. And no Pac man at an arcade yet. Roller skating and bowling were the main norm for teenagers in mid-Century.
From the article and the ad on the upper right points out that the rink originally opened in late 1950s due to the attire of the skaters in a poorly printed photograph. The "Under new management" was in 1960 so that places the first opening in late 1950s. Reopening with new management was Friday, 30 September 1960. Then they had grand reopening. Likely again new management on Friday, 02 October 1964.
So this places the names as in correct order:
St. Matthew's Roller Rink followed by St. Matthew's Armory, then St. Matthew Armory Roller Rink. Very slightly changes to difference the management ownership.
I will need a lot of information! Anyone can help? Will need to know what floor material, when first opened, closed, reopened (got that), closed, and reopened last time (got that), and closed for good. Also who were the operators and managers in correct order.
The building was demolished to make way for a new complex there. it is all modern.
St. Matthew may sound like a church name but it was not. It was named that way named after Matthew who was one of the four authors of the Gospels of Jesus Christ in the Holy Bible. The first of the four Gospel. The town has been annexed by Louisville back in 1960s. Hence the address as Louisville, not St. Matthew.
The Interior.
Likely the floor was Maple. It was rather a small rink with the size of 54 Feet by 95 Feet. Enough for about 100 to 150 skaters. 90 Skaters average were there.
Likely they had a cut off rink floor to allow space for seating, eating area, and snack bar.
