Yelp. Noticed it was Skate City Legends taken in 2014. Apparently in 2018, management change but kept the franchise as Skate City and it is now Skate City West.
Top and Bottom photos courtesy of Google Maps. Note top is from 2007 as Skateland. That very 1970s look. It was truly Red Bricks with White Stone White vertical stripes and no windows. It also had tiring Baby Blue trim around the building as it was taken in 2017.. The renovation changed all that. They painted it all Skate City White and Skate City Royal Blue. Those little Sand colored rectangular on the wall when it was Skateland. Perhaps at the time when it first began, They were small windows. Then filled in but the newly renovated, windows are in those same spots. Wow, real small windows! What are those behind that wall with windows. Glad they removed the road work barriers they had up originally. I guess they did not want people to drive through parking slots. The reason the sign at the far end was because of the building in front of the rink was in the way and closer to the corner.
Yelpers took those pictures. One was taken in 2016 under Skate City Legends and the other is the current operators with Skate City West. No differences. But the floor looks so much like ice. Was it concrete with Ice White paint? I saw photos of cracks in a worn out floor. Those two photos above are pretty good to hide. If cracks, this means Concrete. Needs to replace the floor soon. It has been 40 years so lifespan of it already peaked. And I see photos with people in it but I can see the ceiling very clearly with wet spots. The photo on the left showed it has. It is even worse in other areas. Needs new roof soon.

There were several names came and went at 7838 Washington Ave, Kansas City Kansas. They were there for quite a while.
The first one was opened in 1972 when the Hippies out there continued to say, "Peace and make love, not war" and was still remembering they spend the most awesome weekend at Woodstock. It was Wyandotte Skateland when they first opened. But in 1993, after its 21 years run, it became Skate City Legends. That was an entirely new name and the name, "Skate City" was not in association with Skate City corporation that owns several franchises including this one currently on the same site. But different franchisee owning the current one separately from the Skate City Overland Park and Skate City Shawnee rinks.
Wyandotte Skateland West Returned in 1997 as homage to the original Wyandotte Skateland as well as a reboot. Rebooting was quite popular in 1990s and 2000s for just anything. Not just the rinks, cars Yes, you remember the New Beetle? PT Cruiser? Camaro? Mustang? The Spanish revivalism, French Revivalism, and the current Retro Googie's? OK, You get the idea.
Then Skateland returned without Wyandotte in its name as seen on Google Map. But it returned again in 2018 as Skate City West. Without Legends as it was in the past. Skate City West is still operational today which brings nearly 40 years of roller skating at that rink.
Has a good walking score of 62 points but not so with public transportation. Problem is that with you can see names changes has a reason. The location of the rink is pretty hidden as you can see on Google Map or Mapquest. No matter what, all online maps agree that it is hidden behind an office building and a 3 story bank in the corner. Also there is a hill going up on the side that you cannot see from that one side where the bank parking lot is. The other road, no, and if you know where the US Post Office is and drive to the Post Office, you would know where the rink is. geographically tough but walking distance is pretty good though. Homes are behind the rink.
I noticed some of the Social Media critic websites (Usually Yelp, Four Square, Google, Google Image, Facebook, Angel's List, etc) they mentioned several rinks at this location have a very poor staff. Please, review your staff and evaluate them and if they are doing bad job, maybe you are hiring the wrong ones. Second of all, usually they are young or teens, you need more of adult age staff who have had parental experiences that they can work with children and teens better and for adult skates, some new staff as muscular bouncer types to separate fights. Also hire staff with good CPR and First Aid certification as well as hire security, not some wannabe mall cops types, hire real off duty police officers who are moonlighting their jobs. Something, please! Now, as for the wrong ones, let them go and replace with good staff. If beaches have excellent lifeguards with certifications, maybe you can hire them for off-season from summer season of swimming.
One thing though, there are conflicting dates of start up for each rink name. On Buzz File, it said that Wyandotte Skateland began in 1996 however, in Rink Time website, it said it started in 1972. Please anyone, tell me which one began and what dates is correct? It also stated that Skateland Centers is the main parent company that operated Wyandotte Skateland and Wyandotte Skateland West. Bit confusing.
I need actual dates for all of them.
The Interior.
I do not know what the original look like. Clearly it was a massive renovation on the exterior which also means interior as well. I saw some pictures of parents took of their children with their skates on. And I can see the carpet. I see two kinds. Of course, it was black light neon carpeting. First was with skates and music notes and other pizzazz on it. Then the newer one looks brighter, it has new shapes.
The floor might be Concrete because of the cracks I saw in photos on Yelp. And second of all, it is painted Ice White color to make that appearance too much like an ice rink. That can be a mistaken for some ice skaters thinking it is an ice rink when they want to search for a rink to skate but it is not. Photos can paint a 1000 word and ice skaters will think it is. Maybe better different color or more signs to say it is a ROLLER RINK. Maybe say Skate City Roller Rink West. Just a constructive criticism and opinion.
The Exterior.
I never seen what the original look like. But I am glad Google Map has a 2008 photograph of Skateland. It was showing Deep Red-Bricks bricks with Stone-White stones stripes that are vertical. It also had Sky Blue awnings from one corner to another and on.
Architecturally, it appeared to be a Skate Country copyrighted design or at least a copy of it but the difference is the extension part has roof line matches to the rest of the building. Skate Country does not. It is a couple of feet lower.
But with Skate City, they changed the appearance. Looked much newer and brighter. And likely new awnings as I can see clearly in the two photos. Any more photos anyone?
