Skateland, 809 East Jerome Lane, Monett, MO
This rink has one of the most common name, Skateland. I believe it was part of a franchise chain. I am not sure. But this rink ran for 40 years. Morris Henderson opened this rink in 1972 in a small plaza on a corner where East Jerome Lane is located. It eased operations during the winter of 2011-12. Morris owned the rink for 10 years before he sold it to someone else who operated the rink.
There are not a whole lot of pictures of the rink. I only got the interior but no exterior. Anyone has them? What about you, Morris?
The style was very basic and had old look. Wood panel boards that were popular between 1950s and 1980s. That was right by the snackbar and DJ music was. The rink clearly was concrete. And the walls were white. This is the appearance of the rink in latter years before it closed for good. It had natural looking bricks on the side at least half wall. There was a blue stripe run along the rink. The half-walls were built with cinder-blocks and it was Red, Yellow, Blue (top to bottom) running horizontal. It was not trying to be fancy rink. It was very basic rink and mix-match appearance.
I have no idea about external but it was in an L-shaped plaza and it appeared to be very plain looking plaza. Now it is filled with other commercial including retail stores at that plaza. Napa is at one end. I believe the rink in its entirely of that plaza.
Because of the shut down of Skateland which was the last privately owned rink in Monett, the YMCA opened a rink session at their facility's basketball court. Interesting was that they invited Morris, the founder and operator of Skateland (original owner) to see the new opening.
The director of YMCA mentioned there were other rinks before Skateland. Oh well, he did not say the names of those other rinks! He mentioned this as I quote from that newspaper online- Brown noted that roller skating has a long history in Monett. The Binion's furniture store at Fourth and Bond had the first known roller skating rink in town on its second floor, dating back to the 1930s. By the 1960s, the facility at 13th and E. Broadway was built as a skating rink, and was subsequently used by the Monett Sheltered Workshop. Henderson kept the service going on the south side of town in opening Skateland in the plaza at 801 Jerome Lane, where it ran for almost 40 years. (Roller skating starts Friday at Monett YMCA, Thursday, January 30, 2014, Monett-Times.)
