Skateland Bedford Street, Johnstown, Pennsylvania was also likely known as Johnstown Roller Rink but not sure. But the history of Skateland was well known. It was also known as Johnstown's Ball Room Roller Rink according to the Facebook page for The Wilmore, Pennsylvania Neighborhood.
Anyone know where exactly this was in? Bedford was a very long street. Practically the main road. I am sure the building was demolished. Anyone know exaclty where by what other street on the corner?
This rink maybe a sister rink to the other Skateland that was on 423 Walter Avenue, Johnstown, PA as I just discovered according to skaters on Facebook talking about Skateland on Bedford Street.
It is hard to say when this rink was opened but by observations on the photos that can pinpoint era. The exterior showed a lot of windows which dates before 1950s because in 1950s till now, rinks are fully enclosured without any windows. Second of all, Older pictures showed exposed wood trusses which usually dates to first quarter of the 20th Century. So, likely this was built in 1920s. Maybe even 1930s. People commented they skated and the news clip from 1975 puts the rink to closure around late 1970s or early 1980s. This is all guesstimate, not factual.
That would mean around 60 years of operations overall. Names changed a couple of times or three times. I do not have dates. Anyone?
Now about the rink itself.. anything?
The Interior.
The 1975 news clip was helpful to see in grainy as well as the old B/W photos that it was Maple wood floor, unpainted. It had posts/columns on the rink floor which was not comfortable for some. But helpful for beginners though. Remember those days no "Walkers on wheels" as many call it (Skate-mates) to depend on.
The original showed windows which back then lit the interior well. It did well brightened and the later version photo showed it was covering up the ceiling and they had that "UFO" looking ceiling round thingy. Was that the lights or speakers? Hard to tell in the photo. Anyone?
The rink was on ground floor "Basement" as the ballroom was upstairs. This is why the columns support on the rink floor to hold up upper floor.
The Exterior.
The building looked like it was a two story building. That is because the rink floor was on the ground floor because it was set on a hill. The interior photos showed the windows which places them on ground "basement" level as the upstairs likely the ballroom. As I saw on Google Map street level view, they showed a lot of hills and hilly area where the main road, Bedford Street is. Beautiful area though. But where was the rink?
The color photos showed it was Hunter Green trims with Snow White. Common in 20th Century especially in early half century. They continued with the same colors for many decades.
