Courtesy of Skateland/Cheryl Juehring. Wow, very popular logo used by rinks with this "martial arts-kick" look-like with skates on with the ILY hand sign on that girl's right hand.
Courtesy of The Muscatine Journal. It was a Christmas party for young people and teens. Noticed the guys in the background drinking GLASS bottle of sodas!? But one lady I felt she is bit creepy, no offense lady, but she was in all dark--perhaps black attire and not skating at all. I noticed everyone else has skates on but her! Arms crossed and very serious. Perhaps the other lady, the lady in black's left side is looking at her. Pretty spooky isn't she, Jay and Steve? Ah no lockers! All skaters had skate boxes or cases all under the benches! They only had a very basic clothes line for jackets as seen behind the boys with soda bottles.
Courtesy of all real estate agencies I listed. They all listed exact same photos so I have no idea who had them originally. I love the ceiling because it retains beauty above in that condition compared to the faded dull Maple floor. You can see the 2nd photo from bottom that showed the differences in one section still polished and stained. And that black mark on the floor. That was either because of leaks ruined the floor or fitness tool oil spill. A fitness center with soda machine? That is not how it works heathwise. Another story another time.
Skateland 701 Orange St., Muscatine, IA
This is a very popular name for a skating rink almost everywhere. But this one was held in Muscatine, Iowa. it was built in 1950 in old school design of this rink. It is very unique in many ways such as it had glass block windows when it was still common in 1920s and 30s but this was 1950s which came back in style and other places had big windows before rinks closed up into a warehouse like rinks.
It was built in 1950 as Skateland and ran for long time. Closure is unknown. In recent times, it was a gym and then another gym but it was sold in November 2019 so I have no idea what will be housed there. The photos you seen above are remodeled interior by previous owners. Wow, very bold interior you saw.
The history I can see is brief and recently on one of the real estate site showing history of buying and selling. It was sold in November 11, 2005, December 8, 2007, and November 19, 2019. Hmm, someone did not last long! Likely it was sold before 2005 but I could not find futher unless I can read the deed. Is it public information? Hey possible cousin Josh Gates, can you help me exploring unknown on this?
It has an apartment behind the main rink building. From what I saw, it looks like a very basic or simple design apartment that it can be a bachelor pad.
It was sold recently according to those 3 real estate websites. Real good price last year! 87.500 DOLLARS! Ah, I wish I could buy it and turn back to a rink but the floor.. needs to replace! Blow another 50 Thousands Dollars for the floor and other things too. That would be about 200,000 Dollars with renovations and purchase of the rink.. in my opinion.
Cecile Wolfe owned and operated the rink for 50 years. 50 years! Because of this, and Cecile's daughter worked in a local school, this came up with an idea to raise funds for the children in school, in 2015, they had T-shirts made with the logo and sold them. The article did have a link but it is not available. It says error. LIkely they are not in selling anymore. Shucks! I would love to have one of those shirts! I would need to ask permission to have those made and we sell them as well! In meantime, you can buy Dead-Rinks shirts and stuff!
The Interior.
The interior had entire floor in Maple wood. It is said it is still intact in present day! That is a 70 years old Maple wood floor! An overdue to replace! It is beautiful interior with Arched roof exposing with steel beams and clear coated wood ceiling for the Arched-Curved roof. Sunlights coming in the glass blocks up by the admission door, and other parts of the building. Yes, Maple even off the rink floor. Likely the original rails were steel but the replacement was cinderblocks half wall commonly seen at most modern rinks.
The Exterior.
It is a cinderblock built Arched-Curved roof building that has glass blocks for windows which reflex as 1950s look. That is because it was built in 1950. The end walls on each end has a faux flat step roof look. It makes me wonder why many rinks are built to hide the Arched-Curved roof to show those ends like that. It would have looked nicer without it as I can see in the photo although it has snow on it. Ha.
Likely walls were all White like snow.
