Both photos courtesy of Google Map, top to bottom: June 2013 followed by March 2019. Improved with better color but too plain though. It is a plaza now with it appeared to be 3 separate business slots for the former rink.
House of Wheels 2705 S Lewis St, New Iberia, LA
Skate Zone 2705 S Lewis St, New Iberia, LA
Skate Zone 2705 S Lewis St, New Iberia, LA
Skate Zone was at 2705 S Lewis St, New Iberia, Louisiana but the House of Wheels did because it was a dba. However, after a situation which did hurt the Skate Zone at one time did close its doors for good and now it is a non-traditional fitness center as I can see on Facebook. You can watch the videos on there what they do. But now, another fitness center is there which is more common franchise, Cross Fit.
Skate Zone owner was Frank Torries and his manager Tricia Boudoin who ran the rink. The Sheriff had both of them arrested for having bad music. This is a classic "Footloose" movie type of incident Well, sort of.
Anyway, hardly history known for House of Wheels specifically but we can say more about Skate Zone. It is truly sad and misunderstanding what was going on. First of all House of Wheels and Skate Zone are same as a dba.
You see, on February 5, 2000, the Sheriff's Deputies were called in to break up a fight and the deputies had to use 2 tear gas grenades to break up a crowd. They then shut down the rink and seize the music because they perhaps heard it or asked what was playing during the time. That night there were about 150 to 250 skaters, mostly teens.
The deputies did only fire first one to stop but apparently a fight continued so they had to send another tear gas grenades in the crowd and the fight and it was more successful.
The Deputies found out that the rink was rented to Troy "Troy D" Derouen, a disc jockey in New Iberia. This occurred when deputies arrived at the scene, Derouen already had left. Apparently the rink was still operational but the DJ left the scene of the incident he was responsible. So, the Deputies produced a warrant for obstruction of justice was sought for Derouen's arrest, Instead, they seized Derouen's equipment until he can be found.
So, a week later, the owner and the manager of the rink instead were arrested. Nothing about the DJ being arrested.
That includes the music and then quickly this federal judge said it was a violation of Free Speech in a lawsuit filed by ACLU which made the Sheriff to return the equipment and music back to the owner of the rink. It was settled out of court.
All above are from The Daily Iberian and ACLU. (several links are in Sources below) The case is Torries v. Hebert, Civil Action No: CV00-0512-L-O.
I believe they never reopened again after that incident.
As for real estate information, no information to provide such as size of building, property, etc.
The Interior.
N/A.
The Exterior.
Very simple design. Likely the main doors were in front facing Oil Center Road and this was a bit unusual design. Not like any other rinks with a small extension of the building but this one has a very long extension because the right corner is different than the rest. See photo.
All frontages that faced both roads have that faux roof-line. It hides the Gable roof. The walls are mixed. Some are Steel sheet metal walls and other Cinder-blocks. But the rear sides (back and wall facing yard) are all Steel-walled.
