All Courtesy of Skate World. The pro-shop.. WOW. Yeah, that is a good one seeing so many skates for sale! I never seen a pro-shop at a rink in my research AND from my experience to see this many skates for sale. The second most I ever seen is at Black Mamba Skate Park in Syracuse, NY. I also love the snack bar! Why? Beautiful stone veneer wall, 1960s style area because of the wall, the linoleum seat booths and the linoleum specks theme on the floor, and the countertop. It gave very retro even in 1978! If it did work well, then it worked well for 40 plus years!
The photo with the Panda is likely the party room. I can see why commenters on Yelp and elsewhere would say those rooms are way small.

Edward "Ward" Miller and his mother, Geraldine Miller started Skate World Preston in August 1978. Skate World or known as Skate World Preston was on 6310 Preston Highway, Louisville, KY. Hence the nickname used, "Skate World Preston." This very close family owned and operated ran a good run till Ward's passing in December 2020 and because of the shut down due to Covid, it was really hard for them.
Geraldine Miller's husband Ernie Miller ran J-towns SkateWorld with partners.
The building, however, was on the market for a couple of years and finally was able to sell to someone who is going to change into something else. I believe they wanted to keep it as a roller rink but could not find a buyer. Only if I had the money... and save all rinks including this one because of people want to skate and for owners to feel better to be just managers and no headaches.
But the passion I seen with the Millers at this rink was truly dedicated with the evidence I seen--their Facebook. They made posters by hand, not by a computer. They were very basic but beautiful rink.
But with their situation with Ward's death, COVID lockdown and most of all, they were selling the building for a couple of years (that sets pre-dates global lockdowns).
The Interior.
It has beautiful Maple wood floor with beautiful colorful globe pendants hanging from the ceiling. Of course, there were two Mirror Balls hanging on the ceiling.
The Exterior.
Gable roofed, Free-Span Steel Truss Steel and Cinderblocks - Walled Warehouse - like Building. It has true eye catching a super sized canopy above the door. It looks larger-than-life when it comes to that building size. It is in Charcoal Gray color with the name Skate World in White lettering.
But what really attractive is the conservative but colorful stripes. Red and Blue on White background. See photo above.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A. Floor: Polyurethane coated Maple, clear. Floor Layout: N/A.
Building Size: 22,311 SF. Built: 1978. Demolished: Still standing
Type of Building: Free-Span Steel Truss Steel and Cinderblocks - Walled Warehouse - like Building.
Roof: Gable.
Acres: 3.3290 Acres.
Operated: (Overall)-- 1978 to Sunday March 07, 2021.
Reason for Closure: Ward's death, global COVID lockdown, but mostly due to building up for sale a couple of years which predates COVID lockdown.
Wanted: Information regarding exact dates of open/closed, why closed, size of rink, rink materials. Also photos. Anyone knows or have photos, please let me know by emailing at [email protected]. Thank you.
