Skate Time 209 5164 US-209, Accord, NY. Current logo although they do not use 209 in this incarnation of the original rink since it is new management. I love that early 1970s feel for a rink that was opened in 2005. It was all about Retroism which was big in 1990s and the decade of 2000s. Courtesy of Skate Time.

Skate Time 209 5164 US-209, Accord, NY. it was in its hay days as seen with their signs. I love it in red which pops to show public where they are in this open green space. It is out in the countryside. Courtesy of Loop Net.
Skate Time 209 5164 US-209, Accord, NY. It is abandoned as seen in this photo. This clearly showed how it was unkept with their garden/landscape have changed. Overgrown undesirable nature towering above the roofline on the left. Trees already tower over. In 2012 photos it showed it was short. Also see an abandoned sign that has nothing to do with the rink. It has to do with some charity meet at the parking lot. This photo taken in late 2022. Courtesy of Google Maps.
Skate Time 209 5164 US-209, Accord, NY. Ticket booth and the side view of the rink including snack bar and Fun Store. Noticed how the looks were very Memphis Group Graphic look. It is clearly evident seeing the geometric shapes and waves were seen on the carpet and on sections by the names of what vendor those were. Very 1980s. Often Yelpers complained it was dated. It was NOT dated. It was RETROISM. Popular style of the 1990s and 2000s. Hey Chris Tucker, can you say those words in your squeaky voice to Yelpers what part they do not understand? Courtesy of Yelp.

Skate Time 209 5164 US-209, Accord, NY. This area was where the Skate Park was and the still standing arcade and eating area. Good thing the floor tiles were not like those 1970s fast food Weaving Pattern Terra Cotta tiles you remembered. They are typically 1970s standards but problem is.. they are not what you like. They made a lot of noise and a lot of thumping when you skate that floor. I know. Ha. Empire Skates East had that and oh! Ha ha. So, this floor featured above was linoleum vinyl.

Skate Time 209 5164 US-209, Accord, NY. Skate Park. This was right next to the Snack Bar. See photo number 6 and 7 although the current 7th lives of 9 lives has no Skate Park anymore. That is where the factory where they make popcorn will be. I used to make popcorns for this theater that has six screen. It took me 3 hours to make about 2 weeks worth of popcorn. Big machine and all. Courtesy of Skate Time.
Skate Time 209 5164 US-209, Accord, NY. Party room. Current store featuring their popular popcorn and souvenirs including hats and t-shirts. I recommend they also sell the retro shirts and hats of the original rink for some skaters who remembered the original. Owners, take note. Courtesy of Skate Time.
Skate Time 209 5164 US-209, Accord, NY. Beautiful updated interior look. No 1960s-70s painted pictures with lines and curves. God forbid they ever threw them out. Skate Time 5164 US-209, Accord, NY (Rebooted and currently operating)
Skate Time 209 5164 US-209, Accord, New York, was original rink however, in late 2019, it was sold and became Neighborhood 209 but suddenly they had to close down because of the Great Virus Lockdown of 2020 forcing hundreds of thousands of businesses globally shut down and out of business including stores, rinks, malls, businesses, and many more. Some of the rinks went out of business big time between 2020 and 2022. The timing was not right for the owners of Neighborhood 209 Roller Rink. It was disastrously and unforeseen to see all unnecessary businesses to shut down permanently.
Stephen Apkon and Marcina Lee Hale-Cristobal purchased Skate Time 209 from the original owners, Len and Terry Bernardo and converted to Neighborhood 209. They bought it in around September 2019 and were introduced on 04 October 2019 on Facebook.
But that rink, Neighborhood 209 never reopened and finally in late 2022, the abandoned rink reopened as Skate Time once again. But without the 209 as suffix.
At one point in 2021, the town of Rochester was going to buy the space to use for offices and as a recreation center. But by summer of 2022, the building was on the market, for more money at 2.3 Million Dollars. The Neighborhood 209 owners wanted a profit for a rink that needed repairs. A blogger presented evidences I can see it needed repairs and shamed themselves for what they have. That is what the blogger statements sounded like. Please click here.
Bjorn Quenemoen, and his wife, Jamie O’Shea and Stephanie Bauman are the founders and operators of solar powered popcorn maker company, BjornQorn which is actually the owner of the roller rink. They originally were looking to buy a building to expand their factory to manufacture and bag all popcorns to meet the demand for their popular merchandise. They already have 500 stores or outlets where they sell their popular snack. They actually began in college as popcorn parties to see if any would buy their popcorns and that is how they got their start.
As this is not only Rink-History, this is also International Commercial Archeology Preservation© part so this is part of the history as well.
But the idea was changed when the popcorn brand had never harbored a desire to operate a skating rink. Still, the prior owners had removed an indoor skate park, which opened 8,000 square feet of warehouse space inside the approximately 30,000-square-foot building.
Then they had an idea to be more like Willy Wonka feel to it. A skating rink next to the popcorn factory where children can enjoy watching how they make popcorn and bagging and boxing the bags of popcorns and ship out.
Bauman isn’t yet sure how BjornQorn will cross-brand a skating rink with popcorn. First things first, they plan to refresh the rink: a facelift, some heavy cleaning, new carpets. They want to get a wine and beer license to make a “sort of indoor beer garden situation” but will keep “the 80s-90s nostalgia vibe.” They’ll add a garage to use as a loading dock and will include the Mid-Hudson Misfits, the roller derby team that practices at Skate Time weekly, in the planning.
When Skate Time reopens, pricing will be similar to what it was previously: a fee to get in, and a couple of bucks more to rent skates. The arcade will remain. “It’s a place where anyone would or could feel welcome and comfortable,” Bauman said. "We want to keep accessible and fun for everyone. That’s a big part of the mission.”
Skate Time reopened in March 2023 with much fanfare.
Mark's Opinions:
I love the idea of a rink like a Willy Wonka feel to it. Having seen Gene Wilder movie as Willy Wonka, I love the concept of factory tours. I do. And I love the idea of a popcorn company have a part where they can manufacture popcorn right inside next to the rink whereas child skaters and adults alike can watch how popcorns are made and bagged and boxed. I have seen tours. I have seen how products are made. And even worked in one. Magna NPG Transmission plant (Syracuse, NY ceased), Ford River Rogue making F150s, then Bombardier (now called BRP) Ski-Doo, and of course Jean's Potato Chips manufacturing company (Ceased).
This is wonderful concept. I love it. One problem. Popcorns tend to be all over the floor by careless people both adults and children. Having worked as a movie theater usher, I seen carelessness already in late 1980s. Therefore, popcorn should only be allowed in factory section and people eat regular snack bar food. That way it would not be spread all over even spilled onto the roller rink floor. Think twice.
The Interior.
Skate Time 209: It had that 1970s feel to it. The photos I saw how those graphics were very Retroism of the 1970s to it. The logo, the graphics on the wall. It had those geometric lines and organic lines as well which places them to be 1970s. Maybe 1960s even. But they said the rink only been around for 15 years so this was all new in Cira 2005! It was Retroism at the time as I recalled how styles and fashion are cycled. Like in 1980s had 1930s to it for fashions.
They had a dual plex entertainment center including the roller rink and a skate park. Rarely rinks has both. Black Mamba in Syracuse, NY has a dual plex of both rink and park is one of rare find.
The carpet was very much of Memphis Group Graphic Design, a very 1980s-1990s look.
Neighborhood 209: Since they just bought it then suddenly had to shut down never materialized the rink to have new looks. However, they actually did take out the Skate Park section that was about 8,000 Square Feet.
Skate Time: They renovated with new looks, paints, new carpets, and added a bar to serve alcohol beverages and of course, to serve popcorn!
