Skateland 10722 US Highway 68, Kenton, OH. An old sign at the time. Of course, they had Pepsi as their choice of brand to sell at the concession stand. You can see this was an old sign. Date unknown. Source: Pinterest.

Skateland 10722 US Highway 68, Kenton, OH. You can still see that sign as of 2016 as Google Map showed. All those years still up. Empty there as I can see from 2009 to 2016 photos Google took. But they did not do any updates since. Source: Google.

Skate Route 68 was a rink on 10722 US Highway 68, Kenton, Ohio. It was also Skateland aka Kenton Skateland. It was built in 1973 (newer building on the right). It is abandoned since 2004 according to someone on Facebook who said he lived in 1990s above that building. It was a rink an an apartment. Since he said that as of January 14, 2021, this building is still abandoned! You might have a chance to buy up and fix it up to make it a rink again.
Anyone knows about the rink? Owners? Change of owners? Why closed and photos would be desired.
On Spokeo, it showed a history when it was last sold. It was in July 1995 for 300,000 USD. Right now they said it is valued at 50,000 USD! Big drop! And unusual for prices to drop this big. Why? It also said to have three owners. Hmm.
Looked like J. and D. Abele were the owners of Skateland and in 1995, sold it to a N. Varghese who closed it in 2004 and still the owner since.
The building was sold a few years back according to a post on Facebook. Sold to the day care center next door! But apparently it was not happening. It was beyond repair for the rink because of being in state of abandonment. Likely it will need to be demolished. When that happens, I will update this profile.. And more pictures as well from any of you.
I feel I have some errors here so please correct them. Thank you!
UPDATE! -- (28 December 2021).
I received an email from a former employee who worked at this rink. He emailed on Christmas Day. Edited. Here is what he has to say --
I worked there for years... I have lots of old photos but none are digital. It was closed due to the fact crowds dwindled and it was ran by a young man who lacked some in business sense. It was not ran by the owners. (Aww, shucks! would lvoe to see those photos!)
They weren't making enough money during the warm months to keep it open and blew through money when it was more plentiful during the winter.
It was red white and blue. That was done in the very late 90's beginning of 2000's. The interior was also painted in red white and blue at one point. Before that the outside was solid dark green.
Floors were concrete and cracked the last few years it was open.
We used to play paintball in there at night and [have] to hurry up and get it cleaned for the next day.
The size of the building can be found on the Hardin county Ohio auditors site.
I used to have dreams of buying this and opening it back up... but with the economy of Kenton and the huge battle with drugs in the area... even IF the building is worth saving I do not believe the community could support it, sadly.
We also used to run a ham radio station out of my buddies apartment above the entrance.
It was a great place...(Oh yeah, that can be bad with the drugs going on and the violence lately.. Many things not good happening these days about anywhere).
Merry Christmas to you.
Well, likewise you too, and thank you for emailing me with corrections.
The Interior.
It was a two story. Ground floor was the main attraction-- the skating rink followed by second floor was an apartment that someone said on Facebook lived on during 1990s. He knew the ending was in 2004.
Floors were concrete and cracked the last few years it was open which made the roller rink floor difficult for skaters.
The Exterior.
It was a two story building. The front part was two story because second floor was an apartment. The rest was a rink. There was a sign that was very common in 1960s-70s (shown on top). That sign was common with Pepsi brand on the sign above and larger than the name of the rink. It says Skateland. To be honest, I like the sign because I like the simplify of the design at the time although the dominant was too focus on the soda brand because it is larger in size than the name. Since it was common, another rink as in for example was Columbia Skateland had the similar sign.
The smaller one in the photo is a day care center which is still operational. The main building on the right was common appearance of Steel Walled, Free-Span Steel Trusses built building. It appeared to be 85 feet wide because it was common width of such type of building. Length was longer. Of course Gable roof.
It was American colors of Red White and Blue. They painted that in the very late 1990's or beginning of 2000's. The interior was also painted in red white and blue at one point.
Before that the outside was solid dark green (Perhaps Emerald Green or Evergreen)
