Skate Palace was located at 900 Highway 34, Elk City, Oklahoma before it became Elk Skating Center. On Google Map, it looked abandoned because no one was there in middle of the day during the week when they filmed this and second of all, it does look abandoned because of a fading sign and weeds/grass are growing. It sits in between two motels on a somewhat quiet neighborhood. There is a big intersection though. And that is Interstate 40, the new highway that replaced Route 66, the Mother Road. so to speak, this rink qualifies as "near Route 66 rink" category.
I do not have any other information related to the Skate Palace but it became Elk Skating Center in 2008 according to Manta.
It is still operational but a mysterious way because they have no website, and no Facebook business page. Just a Facebook fan group of Skate Palace and Elk Skating Center. That is all. It is a pretty sleeper rink in a sleeping part of town. That group has quite small album of skaters skated there in 1980s and 1990s. That is what it appeared to be with the styles they had for their hair and clothing and the Kodak/Fuji film photographs were like. All showing skaters, not the place. So, I have no idea what it was like back the day. Apparently very different, of course. Right, Skate Palace skaters?
It looks like a very good rink because of high marks on Google search giving a good score of 4.8 out of 5 points.
If so, I recommend you check out Elk Skating Center. It is still operational. Sad thing is, no Facebook and no website to depend on for the session hours.
The Interior.
I have no idea what it was like before say 2010s. This rink appeared to be around for a long time. Floor at the time is unknown. But this time, it may be a Concrete floor and painted. Either White or Sky Blue. Hard to tell in the photo.
OK, I found more! On Facebook, there are a few photos. They had a Starburst Lights in center of the Ceiling. The walls were Dark Red with Sky Blue paint on Concrete.
They updated the look with LED string lights making it so streaky different. Maybe hurt my eyes if I was there (blind eye I have can be bothered with black lights. That was black light on).
There isn't much to show at all! Hmm.
The Exterior.
It is a simple Free-Span Steel Trusses Steel-Walled Warehouse - like Building with Gable roof. Sand Tan color for the walls. It sits close to the road than the other motels. One sits close on the left side and close to the road but the motel to the right sits further back and appeared bigger. There is another motel across the street as well. It is so clear that it is the exchange exit for Interstate 40. And for the Route 66 traveling fans to rest as well.
