Skate Country Oakwood 3485 Old Oakwood Rd, Oakwood, GA
Skate Country Oakwood was operated in Oakwood, Georgia. One of few Skate Country rinks but I believe it was part of a group of Skate Country of GA, a skating company owned by Susan and Jim Means. along with Gainsville, GA and Buford, GA. Read the update in next paragraph.
UPDATE: A skate fan points out that.. in her words: Susan and Jim Means own the company the sold Oakwood (rink) to the company next door the rink and built the one in Buford (Georgia). The Buford rink IS still operational. So is the Gainsville, GA Skate Country.
This clearly now means that they owned this Skate Country Oakwood and sold it and opened a new one in Buford as a "replacement" rink.
But those two Skate Country rinks' website is somewhat dated. Very early 2000s look. Really needs to modernized like here on Dead-Rinks. In fact, there is NO email address for me to ask them if this Oakwood location was theirs. They need to update everything. A little strange I have to say.
Only thing I can see is updated on that website was about COVID-19 that they are reopening on May 21st weekend. Oh, that is today! Welcome back, Skate Country! Same with any other rinks that are opening again.
The architectural design at the Oakwood location is exact same copy as the Gainsville, GA location. Apparently they are related. Or I say was related because the Oakwood location has closed. I do not know the dates. But I found 3 real estate sites.. You see, it was built in 1974 and to that design. Likely Skate Country did have a franchise in that year of 1974. Zillow was in error saying that it was sold in August 1998 but this awesome skater name Tiffany said it wsa still a rink in the year 2000. So, they did not close in 1998. Therefore Zillow was in error.
The building did, however, sold again on June 19, 2008. A company owns that and running a very busy place apparently as I can see on Google Map (May 2019). This time, in 2008 when it was sold, it cost new owners $5,830,000. Way too much money!
Not much history about the rink I can tell you.
UPDATE! -- 13 April 2022.
This gentleman who send me an email told me this in email. Cannot wait to see the photos.
I frequented the Oakwood Skate Country for years. I'll check my photos for interior shots, as I know I have some.
I can confirm the Means owned all Skate Country locations. They've owned several businesses throughout the surrounding area for decades.
If you have any questions, I'm happy to pass on any knowledge I have, including pictures.
