This rink was in the same beach town where the famed Daytona Speedway is located. A car racing haven for fans. And for sure, the young adults, teens, and children dreamed of driving or racing cars by go skating at Skate City skating rink. It was opened in year 1984 until December 2014 (date corrected).
Likely those same children grew up and got cars instead and the younger ones found their home video games more interesting featuring car racing and other sports racing. Sad.
There is not much information regarding to the rink because their Facebook page did not show anything at all. Must be removed or whatever the case. Unfortunately I could not capture any photos of the rink without classic and antique automobiles sitting inside the museum! It is now an automobile museum called Hankster's. But never mind, I see it was medium stained Maple wood floor with epoxy coat and oiled as it was from its roller skating days. It may have some clues still there. Maybe that grey shingles siding roof still in the snack bar area. There are much changes too. It is hard to tell.
It is urgent to get the photographs of the rink before it became an awesome museum. If anyone has them, it would be great to have them and posted on here. This is why this website is up for. To preserve history of roller skating rinks.
Anyone, please let me know. Both interior and exterior.
UPDATE--
A Skater who skated there emailed me yesterday saying that the interior was quite a story to him and he painted it so well of what it was like. Here is what he has to say.
I will say up top the "only surviving known photo of the rink interior" does not resemble anything close to what the interior looked like at any point when I visited there, I will link at the bottom the only footage I know of the unmistakable mirror shined floors of Skate City. It was truly a magical place that had a one of a kind look, sound, feel, and smell.
The entire floor save the bathrooms and the rink were carpeted, they had the oldest of old school pinball games, and the bathroom looked like something in an 80's highway truckstop, they sold the best pizza and popcorn you ever tasted, and the DJ always played only the most nostalgic 90's dance hits. I could go on forever about how it was the perfect place in my eyes.
There will never be another place like it for me. We'll try to dig up some old pictures and scan them if you are interested.
Much appreciation, F. B. Daytona Beach, FL.
UPDATE! -- 03 March 2022.
Another email. This one sounded very exciting to tell me about the rink. Funny! Wow, interesting what this drink was all about. I will let you read what she has to say--
Hey!
Skate City in Daytona Beach was where I spent most my Elementary, Middle School, and some early H.S. Days. I loved that place! It was seriously the best! I even had a birthday party there one year when I was about 11 or 12 and that was my favorite birthday party ever!
Some information for you. The Skate City definitely opened way before 2000 as you stated in your article. I graduated H.S. In 1999 and went to Skate City in the 80s and 90s for sure. I believe they opened in 1984.
Funny fact. There used to be a “secret menu” drink called the Suicide, which consisted of mixing a little of all the fountain sodas to make. I remember thinking in middle school that I was so cool asking for a Suicide and I remember thinking it was delicious lol.
They always had the best music! And they also used to have these All night/overnight Skate days every once in awhile.
Hope this info helps :)
Thanks
C.O.
