Skate-A-Way 3612 E. McGalliard Rd, Muncie, IN. This is the correct location and truly shows it was a rink. How? Look at the truss columns on the side that was common at many rinks. The doors usually close to the corner which made sense. That part on the right with garage doors had nothing to do with the former rink at the time. Now its a landscaping company. Source: Google.
Skate-A-Way 3612 E. McGalliard Rd, Muncie, IN. 2013 was the year this photo was taken. It is now a landscaping company. Wow, big windows! Clearly showroom and offices there. Nice stones you got there! No, it is not a rink anymore. Source: Google.

Skate-A-Way 3612 E. McGalliard Rd, Muncie, IN. Interesting that the original name was going to be Munice Skate Away but it was changed after that article to make everyone feel better on the name. Source: The Star Press - 14 November 1977.

Skate-A-Way 3612 E. McGalliard Rd, Muncie, IN
Skate Away 3612 E. McGalliard Rd, Muncie, IN (Proper spelling)
Skate Away 3612 E. McGalliard Rd, Muncie, IN (Proper spelling)
Skate-A-Way in Muncie, Indiana was one of the three rinks in that town competing with two other rinks that now one of those three (Gibson Arena) is still operational. The feeling in the air in that town that people felt they had to compete against each other. One of the other rink closed in early 1980s. That was Hullaballoo Skating Rink.
UPDATE! -- 25 July 2022.
Skate-A-Way is properly spelled as Skate Away according to the photo seen on Facebook.
The rest, please read on...
A skating fan on a forum said this that the Skate Away was one of the worst rink. Here is what he said in a forum managed by Kathy Fry. Some words were spelled correctly in paraphysis.
Basically, During the late 80's you either went to Gibson's or Skate Away. There were a few of us that went to both. I stayed away from Skate-A-Way for the most part, as their floor ROYALLY sucked.
Skate Away Started having MAJOR management issues, and started suffering [maintenance] problems shortly after. They had a big hole in the floor for nearly 2 years, that got worse and worse, with nothing done about it.
The rink was really small compared to the rink at Gibson Arena, and there was a big rivalry between the patrons of each rink. I [remember] fondly the RIP sessions we used to have between the Skate Away Regulars, and the Gibson's Regulars. Some of them had Shirts printed "Skate Away from the Craters in the floor"...etc. Some Skate Away Die Hards used to come to the speed team open practices just to spectate, and heckle... That sometimes caused friction... My cousin used to tell me stories of the stupid crap they would pull on Friday nights in the Gibson Arena Parking lot...
The building that housed Skate Away is still standing but it is now a carpet store. The Old disco floor (Really just a raised 9' X 9' lighted floor stage platform thingy) got sold to the local under 21 club, and was destroyed in a fire 2 years after the rink closed.
That sounds terrible about the rink. Care is important especially you have as a high risk that insurance companies will charge more if you have it more dangerous such as a huge hole on the floor. Safety is number one priority at any business establishments.
UPDATE! -- 2021
I read an email from a fan of Skate Away that I got the address wrong. That was the address I got on one of the lists that I have from one of those: Skating Fitness, FRRP, George's List, A2, and sometimes seen it from Kathy Fry's website and even Skate Groove. That is why I have that old address, 3526 North Broadway Avenue, Muncie, IN. The fan on Kathy's website said the word, "Carpet store" and it matched to that address of 3526 North Broadway Avenue, Muncie, Indiana. But the fan corrected the real location which is 3612 E. McGalliard Rd, Muncie, Indiana. Perhaps it WAS a carpet store at one time at the corrected address. But it Google Map says it is landscaping company.
Maybe it was a carpet store in that location before they went out of business or relocated. Now a landscaping company.
Because of the correction, I do see the building that does look more like a former rink which is now a landscaping business. Google Map showed it looks deserted in 2013 where I spotted it (See photo above.)
Skate Away was incorporated on 16th September 1976. But they closed on 12th February 1990, I believe because there are no internet information regarding that rink except for that one link about their establishment. Only ran about 13 years.
UPDATE! -- 25 July 2022.
I received an email from someone who skated at this rink and told me a bit about it and where it is from.. He mentioned the rink in a Facebook group and I found more information.
The correct spelling is Skate Away. It is also known as Muncie Skate Away but noticed mostly it is the 2 words name.
On Facebook, it said the owners were John and Janice but that were not sure.
This gentleman who send me email said he was recently discussing with his friends and discovered this website. And thanking. Thank you, B.C.!
The original operator was Joe Burnworth.
The Interior.
The walls inside were designed and painted by Ed and Charlotte Shay. They were a couple of art teachers at an university nearby.
I am sorry I do not know what floor they were.
The Exterior.
This building, it has Gable roof Free-Span Steel Truss Steel-Walled warehouse - like Building. The 2013 photo showed it is Off-White. It may have been different color(s) for the rink which closed in 1990.
The photo I just received on 25 July 2022 showed it had likely white colored wall with super large font with the name of the rink on it. I do not know what color because the photo was in black-n-white.

Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former.
