Courtesy of Google Map. Can you see part of the building collapsed inside the walls? That is sad. It showed several rooflines. Front part has flat while there is a D-roof in second section, the third section that is partial collapse (half of that kind of roof) appeared to be Dutch Mansard roof.
Skate-A-Rama, 2113 Whitesboro Street, Utica, NY
Skate-A-Rama was a roller rink in the Greater Utica, NY area where it was a favorite rink of many in the area that was in operations for 50 years give or take. This rink was a very colorful rink yet a very old facility that was surprisingly in running until it was forced to close due to several problems.
Skaters missed this rink and wants this re-opens. At the time the rink was closed in November 2011. it faced originally a electrical fire that forced the rink closed. It was even still in operations when there were no heat in the rink and this caused the interior to weakened and then in 2015, the roof collapsed. It was condemned after the fire so the owner has not yet decided what to do. Clearly with the collapse and the electrical wires old, best recourse would be demolished and rebuilt if they desire to rebuilt.
The rink owner, Bill Schmelcher said, “Obviously, it is something that has been missed by the kids. Three and a half years with no heat, and the building has started to deteriorate.”
The rink ran for 50 years held parties, hockey, skating nights, and skating fun for Utica area skaters. The exterior had American patriotic colors as the interior. It was rather a small rink because you compared to an automobile parked in front of the rink, it would hold five automobiles side by side. That would be about 50 feet wide for the building. Length is unknown.
The building originally had a dome-like roof but made of wood which may contribute to its collapse in 2015.
