Sk8 Place was once a roller rink for a good number of years at the Golden Age Center on 301 South Market St, Galion, Ohio. Before they closed on 22 June 2018, the rink was operated for many years. It did not say when in this article. It was not clear. It was mentioned in Galion Inquirer on 25 February 2016. However, the Gailon YMCA Skate Center was first in 1960s till it was sold to a private owner that I do not know the name of the rink if any. Then the Golden Age Center took over the building and had Sk8 Place operated from 1990s to its closure.
Kirstin Whitt was a co-owner of the Sk8 Place with her business partner, Brad Roark who is Kirstin's mother's boyfriend. She took over the business in 2015 after her grandparents retired. The skating rink has been operated by her family for more than a decade. Kirstin Whitt's grandparents owned and operated the rink for 9 years ending in 2015. This means 2006. Kirstin's grandparents managed after Kirstin's mother had bought out the rink from the earliest owner’s in Whitt’s family – her father and stepmother. Sound bit complicated who owned this or operated. All were in the family. However, the owner and management of Sk8 Place from Mid-1990s to The Whitt Family are unknown.
The rink was at Golden Age Center. The entire building was originally an armory for the military before the Galion YMCA purchased the building in the mid-1960s. It was eventually sold in the early 1990s to a private owner who then sold the building to Golden Age Center, Inc. with Sk8 Place management renting the roller skating rink.
However Kirstin and her partner Brad decided to sell the rink at the end of the year 2016 according to their post that was on Facebook (defunct, unable to retrieve archives), but they had problems in pretty much for the first six months of 2018 with the management of Golden Age Center. So, the rink closed.
Looks like the trouble began in 2016 after that article that the friction between the operators of the rink and the Golden Age Center that finally in June 2018, they closed for good.
The Interior.
Not much has changed at the rink, Whitt said. The Sk8 Place features a simple wooden floor, its walls decorated with graffiti of characters from early-2000s cartoon shows. Management recently bought 200 skates, while keeping some of the older skates back from the YMCA days. -- Galion Inquirer on 25 February 2016.
“I liked to upgrade (more),” she said.
The Exterior.
It is a very unique building. The front façade looked very fort-like while the rest were like a church-like.
