Sir Skate of Altoona 3001 Fairway Drive, Altoona, PA
Sir Skate of Altoona was on 3001 Fairway Drive, Altoona, Pennsylvania was a roller rink during the 20th Century. They appeared to be around 1980s to 1990s. It is believed that it was Maurice A. Lawruck who established and operated this rink when he registered on 5 March 1985. Opened that Spring 1985. Frank Silveri was Owner. But technically, operated by Continental Skate Corp of Curwensville, PA which also operated roller rinks in State College, St.Mary's, DuBois, and Clearfield.
It was opened during early 1985 and it had a good run until the year 2000. This means 15 years.
It is said to have a 1000 pairs of skates.
Bill Kurtis was the manager from 1984 to 1987 although he did music for the rink from 1982 to 1992. I guess he prefer to handle the music than a desk job.
I love the logo design. Really unique design that it was quite interesting.
After it was closed in year 2000, it became Fairway Plaza. Three businesses with their offices are located in the Gabled Roof building.
The Interior.
It had Non-painted Hardwood Maple floor. The interior was very early 80s trendy colors of Brown, Orange, White on Yellow walls and the half-wall rails had as it appeared to be Rusty Orange color. I know the photograph showed very brown film that caused all to look this way. I would not alternate color to see the actual color. Just leave the brochure as it was. And quite frankly surprised that the brochure looked very new although it is more than 20 years old!
The Exterior.
It is Gabled Free-Span Steel Trusses Cinderblocks and Stucco - Walled Warehouse - like Building. When you look from the road facing the former rink, it is a beautiful backdrop seeing the mountains.
The original was rather Dark Red exterior according to the bird view photograph of the rink on the back of the brochure.
