Courtesy of Susan Miller. Once again, another skating rink with the girl skating looking like she is kicking. And of course, she signs ILY with her right hand. ILY means I Love You in American Sign Language.
Courtesy of Pinterest. Notice the sign. It was updated later in the Google Map. This is older version.
Both of Google Map. Bird view and human view of the rink. Not shown are the mini-golf and batting and basketball cages although seen on top view. It is hard to take pic because of the trees and poles and all are in the way! Please support Tim and his family and his recreation center!
Sandy's Roller Rink 8989 Koestner Ave, Burlington, IA
Kenny's Roller Ranch 8989 Koestner Ave, Burlington, IA (Current operating)
Sandy's was a rink that was around for a long time starting in 1928 until Kenny Hart (not related to Tony Hart, the artist on "VisionOn") purchased in 1960 and changed the name which remains to this day but different owner. Kenny Hart passed away in 2008 after he sold it in 1999.
Tim Barraclough bought it from Kenny that year. The rink is approaching to its Centennial celebration in few short years 100th in 2028). A rare feast for a skating rink to be opened this long but the name, no. Sandy's last from 1928 to 1960 which makes it 32 years. Since 1960, that is 60 years. This should be banner year for them although bad memories because of the nCOV/CoViD 19 virus outbreak that globally, people are in lockdown/martial law.
Never mind the virus, when they open again, please visit Kenny's Skate Ranch. The name is properly registered because it is at a dead end street outskirt from a beautiful park and outskirt of cornfields! A true country feel entertainment atmosphere.
Right on the property is the house that the Harts lived. Merely a few feet. Please do not disturb people living in that house. Thank you for understanding. On the other side of the house are two other entertainment venues as part of Kenny's Skate Ranch is a mini-golf and batting cages. They look very nice and gives you very spacious feel because of countryside which should give its patrons real enjoying time and nice entertainment. Compare this to a busy boulevard or main street where there are stress. This by seeing Google Map, I give this a 10 plus to be there and a must-go-to-skating spot. Please support Kenny's! It has mini-golf, batting cages, and basketball hoops.
In 1974, there was a fire that damaged the rink and quickly Kenny Hart had it rebuilt and reopened the rink again.
I discovered there was another Kenny's which was a Kenny's Skateland. It was Skateland USA before Tim B. bought it from none other than Kenny Hart! Now a Salvation Army donation center and a remodeled building which cuts in half leaving the poured Blue paint concrete in terrible condition exposing to outside element. All cracked. Tim B. bought it and named after the previous owner, Kenny Hart.
The Interior.
The interior may be unknown when it was Sandy's as well as the exterior because there are no photographs but there was a fire in 1974 that destroyed and quickly rebuilt that year and reopened likely a month or so later. The current one since then it was a Naked Maple. In another word, Clear coated with polyurethane or of that sort plastic coating rink.
It appeared small and it is with 60 feet by 120 feet out of 85 by 200. It is nearly half but enough room for their skaters to skate. It is beautiful floor.
The Exterior.
Since I have no photos of the exterior when it was Sandy's however, it appeared to be updated long ago with Van Gogh Yellow Steel sheet walls covering the original either stone or cinderblock. I will need more information regarding that. It has shapes of skaters on the walls.
It is Gabled roof building that sits on the end of the street. There are two garages toward the back side between the rink and the house that the Harts lived. Small but enough room parking lot for all three activities including roller rink, miniature golf, and batting cages.
The Stats:
Rink Size: 60' x 120' (Kenny's) Floor: Clear-coated Polyurethane coated Naked Maple. (Kenny's) (looked like it has been replaced--yes, twice. 1974 and recently. Floor Layout: N/A
Note, the Sandy's rink had a fire in 1974 and the sizing may have been different and the floor itself too was different).
Building Size: N/A Built: N/A Demolished: Building had burned down and rebuilt in 1974. Still standing since 1974. Heavy renovated several times. Current appearance is of 1974.
Type of Building: Free Span Steel Steel sheet metal wall Warehouse Building.
Roof: Gable
Acres: N/A
Operated:
Sandy's: 1928 to 1960.
Kenny's: 1960 to present (still operational).
Reason for Closure:
Sandy's: Sold to Kenny for some reason we do not know.
Kenny's: Still operational, Kenny Hart retired in 1999.
Wanted: Information regarding photos of the rink before the fire, and as of Sandy's. And exact dates of open and closed of Sandy's. And reopened as Kenny's.
