Rustic Roller Rink 242 NW Spring Street, Waldport, OR
Rustic Roller Rink 242 NW Spring Street, Waldport, Oregon was once a dance hall and a roller skating rink as well as once used by a college for classrooms. This age old building was demolished on Thursday 17 February 2022 after it was abandoned for about 20 years. This current owner did not do anything for 20 years to repair and it was beyond repair and the town ordered to demolish.
But the building was first built in 1931 originally as a dance hall. Dance halls were popular at the time. Four years later, apparently the dance hall did not work out so the operator/owner of the dance hall sold to two men who renovated into Rustic Roller Rink. They operated from 1935 to 1940. Another set of owners bought the then former rink and turned into Waldport Bowling Alley. It was part bowling alley and part dance center. The admission to the dance for men was 1 USD which was a little expensive at the time whereas admission in 1940 would normally be 50 to 75 Cents. But the real reason was that the expensive admission for men was the females get in for free. I stood correct that it is 50 Cents regular admission price back the day.
After 1960, the building went through a series of owners including serving as an Oregon Coast College annex, a veterinarian’s office, a plumbing shop and a florist shop. Nothing seems to last a long time in that building.
The Interior.
Likely it had wood floor because it was a dance hall originally. It was easy to convert to a rink with little renovations. Just wax the floor, rid of tables and chairs to give more room, things like that.
The Exterior.
It was a Gabled roof, Free-Span Bricks? Trusses Wood? - Walled house - like Building. Original color is unknown but the last of the look was sort of updated. It was in Gloomy Wet Gray wall which looked like plasters/stucco over bricks and Dark Sea Blue trims.
