Rolling Wheels Skating Rink
West Hills Shopping Center, 925 Brodhead Road, Coraopolis, PA
West Hills Shopping Center, 925 Brodhead Road, Coraopolis, PA
Rolling Wheels Skating Rink was at West Hills Shopping Center, 925 Brodhead Road, Coraopolis, Pennsylvania...whew, what an address! This rink was once in that plaza and the plaza itself is no longer around because now it is a super Walmart because I see it is a huge sized building with huge parking lot.
This skating rink was first heard on Thursday, 20 May 1982 and perhaps was first opened the following night, on Friday, 21 May 1982 (Oh, that day was M.U.D. for my high school! I remembered it! Sorry for distraction), and last mentioned was Tuesday, 28 September 1995 which was likely closing date. I am sure without the rink and stores were starting to decline nation-wide in 1990s, this may have caused the downfall of West Hills Shopping Center because without major retailors and rink, it was eventually sold to Walmart which torn down to built their supercenter in September 2015, 10 years after the rink closed. I know why that plaza decline. It is the land that is much lower than the road, Brodhead Road and it makes it difficult for shoppers to see how busy it is or lack thereof. The same if you have a business on a higher ground than the main road, you would not get much business. I discovered this problem having spend time shopping at various towns when going camping or trips out-of-town, businesses tend to be lacking sales due to ground level. I know Central New York well that Northern half of Central NY is quite flatter than the southern half of the city which is quite hilly. This major retailor in Fulton, NY is in pretty hidden spot which makes it a bit harder to tell if they are doing good or not. Compared to their franchised stores in East Syracuse which is set on lower. But it does not make any effect for this one however, seemly busier in flatter areas in North Syracuse and Liverpool (Route 11 and route 31 respectively). Great Northern Mall which is on much lower land on Route 31 already has had its last legs in 2021 after major anchors folded in past few years and smaller businesses folded as well. Destiny USA is on more flatter ground that you can see clearly from 81, and other roads nearby making it busy.
This is just a theory of mine.
The West Hills Shopping Center, once the heart of Moon's commercial business, was sold to Wal-Mart for $4.7 million and announced to the public on January 3, 2007. Demolished and built a new store that opened later. Preparation of the site began in the second half of 2015. The store opened in fall of 2016.
UPDATE! -- 29 August 2022.
I received an email regarding this rink. Short simple information regarding this rink. Here is what she has to say --
The Wievels opened Rolling Wheels in the 80’s then Peggy and her family took over but I forget their last names. Wooden Floor.
Thank you so much, Vera but I still like more answers if you can. What kind of wood floor and what layout?
The plaza including the rink was included Sacco Bowling Lanes (later renamed Runway Lanes), Jojo's Gyros, Blandino's Pizza, Jenny Lee Bakery, and in a separate building next to the center's south end, West Hills Cinema.
The Interior.
It is reported to be Wood floor. I assume it would be Maple. Unfortunately I do not know the size and layout of the rink. And the size of the building. Did they had posts where the rink was? Most plazas had posts running in middle of the floor.
The Exterior.
Standard plaza look.

Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
