Rollerworks Family Skating Center 12099 Marsh Road, Bealeton, VA
First it was Hugo's Skateway, then Rollerworks Family Skating Center on 12099 Marsh Road in Bealeton, Virginia. This rink had a good run. The late Hugo Stribling in 1978 opened Hugo’s Skateway, which quickly became wildly popular.
From December 2009 on, Kathy and Terry Holloway have operated Rollerworks in the leased space. But I see it was sold again and this owner, Lorrina S. bought the rink but it was much shorter time she owned it. However, they went out of business. Their website is broken. No site anymore. And I never seen cars parked for skating. No signs there except for the huge iconic skate up front for motorists to see this famed Americana symbol of skating. Even after they folded, the skate stayed on. It is currently a flea market.
I believe the rink was split into two because of the way the building was designed as a huge rink. Then it was split into two. But no name available. There is a sign that says flea market but I am referring to the wall in front of the building. One I could not read and the other the same with some covering so that one was hard to read. The rink was leased in the building.
I have no closing date but may have folded during late 2010s. Likely early 2017 or even later 2016 because Yelp comments seems to be from 2016 and older, nothing newer than that year.
The Interior.
Beautiful Maple wood floor that was non-painted, polyurethane coated with Red and White walls. It was still in 1970s feel that it had diamond ball on the ceiling, or known as mirror ball or disco ball. Take your pick. It was still having that 1970s Starburst lights with the mirror ball hanging in center. The new owners did not change as they kept it classic.
The space for the rink floor itself was 14,400 Square Feet in a 36,450 Square Feet building. The building split for leasing purposes. Likely they did reduce the rink business size. If half size, this means about 18,225 Square feet. Only about 4000 Square feet of off rink area.
The Exterior.
What topped the most of all like a cherry on top of whipped cream of your favorite ice cream, they had an oversized larger-than-life wooden skate sitting outside in front of the highway-like road that even Americans cruising would stop by and take picture. Truly Americana to take picture of. Rarely seen today and many Americana sights are disappearing. Real sad. But that I believe is still standing today.
It is a huge building with 36,450 Square Feet space. It is a Gabled Roof, Free-Span Steel Trusses Cinderblocks-Walled Warehouse - like Building.
