Both newspaper clippings courtesy of Lisa Pores Strokes-Bear. Both articles were discussing about the grand opening of a new rink in a small town.
Courtesy of Google Map. Present day building that replaced the old Armory. I am sure many vets there remembered the old Armory.
Roll About Roller Rink 117 Independent Street, Tipton, IN
Roll About Roller Rink was built in an old National Guard Armory in Tipton, Indiana. It was on 117 Independent Street where the new building is now for American Legion is at.
Before the rink, it was National Guard Armory in this rather larger building that housed military activities including basketball since you can see that in the old newspaper photograph. I do not have any other information from the net regarding the rink. But the armory was one of 65 installations around the state.
It was operated by Jim and Charlotte Pore, Frank and Carol Pore, John Pore and Richard Pore. All brothers. Jim and Frank were full time fire fighters for Tipton. This was a side venture.
The Roll About Roller Rink was managed by Williams Hicks.
Said to be was operating in the 1980s according to the daughter of her parents, the owners.
The old armory was demolished after the rink was closed and built as an American Legion hall. From one military uses to another-- retired vets.
The Interior.
It was an armory. So, practically it was like a gym like interior with wood floor. Maybe Maple. It even had basketball hoops in there for other activities if any groups or organizations needed to rent. They had windows high up to bring in sunlight.
