Rockin' Roller Rink in Edmond, Oklahoma. This rink has been sold to a fitness and sports center. Photo altered by Dead-Rinks.
The former Rockin' Roller Rink location in Edmond, Oklahoma. Taken in 2008, 2014, and 2019. I am sorry no exterior photos available of the rink floor, exterior, and the interior except for the mural.
The article about Rockin' Roller Rink that was closed for good on Wednesday June 27, 2007 to make way for the new basketball fitness court. No one wanted to buy the rink the owner of the rink wanted to keep it as a rink. Unfortunately, they had to sell the whole thing to someoen else who wanted to convert to something else. Rockin’ Roller Rink 14701 N Lincoln Blvd, Edmond, OK
Rockin’ Roller Rink was located at 14701 North Lincoln Boulevard, Edmond, Oklahoma which wsa operational for a time.
Rockin' Roller Rink was built and opened in 1995. However, closing date was June 27, 2007. The owner and operator Charlie Callahan and his wife, Anna May, held their final public skate Tuesday June 26 and the next day, a farewell '50s party Wednesday June 27, 2007 according to the Oklahoman.
They could not sell it to a new rink operator so instead, they sold the rink to a sports center operator that includes basketball courts, workouts, and computer games. Computer games!? I know what you are thinking. That is not right. Scratch that idea out of your head. It is different kind of game. It is for training to teach players how to play correctly in their games. To show playbacks, and challenges they needed to learn. It is a sports training center called Performance Sports Center. However, that went out too. It is now Thunder Ion Facility. It is now a basketball stadium. I think. It does have to do with the NBA team using this facility as a practice center.
Anyway, The Performance Sports Center lasted only a year. It was closed in a year but sold in a very good price.
When the Callahans sold the rink including the building and all 3.3 Acres of land, it was 1,625,000 USD on June 28, 2007, the next day after the final skate. But the owner of Performance Sports Center, Scott Hill and investors after opening in September 2007, sold the place on July 25, 2008 for a healthy 3,650,000 USD. A huge jump of 1.025 Million US in 13 months! Huge jump during the Great Recession where the housing and real estate market hit the hardest.
It became something Blue Development Center.
Something happened to that sports center. Hmm. But it has been Thunder Ion Center.
The Interior.
It is said to have Concrete floor in the article shown above. But I am sure they finally added Maple wood basketball court. The only photos I could catch are a huge collection of photographs that the Oklahoman had with many bars and this rink. As for the rink, they had "Summer of Slam" which means Flat Track Roller Derby with a few teams competing against each other. There were a lot of fans there as well. Looked like it was pretty packed. Unfortunately I cannot use those photos because the photographer took pictures of fans and a couple of Derby girls competitions. I was able to see the background. Ohhhh! This is the rink I would have loved to attend! Sorry, we all missed it. It had 1950s theme interior. On the wall above the off-the-rink area was showing several 1950s themed such as one was a drive-in. That one appeared to be similar to one I seen in one of my books on history of fast food restaurants and drive-ins and diners. Looked like a Mel's Drive-in. There was a carhop on the wall too. Yes, with skates on. Perhaps that one was related to American Graffiti, the movie starring Harrison Ford, and others
Just to name two of several of the 1950s theme. Another was a checkered floor with 1950s style chairs and dinette table, not a dinette.
I love those! Truly 1950s theme in that place. What a treat! I have worked on 2800 rinks so far and this is the first truly 1950s theme in modern times. A retro since real 1950s rinks I have seen were not like Rockin' Roller Rink at all or any of the 1950s rinks you seen in the movies. No. The real one was very plain. Perfect example to see is the Levittown Rink.
This is one of the best classic retro 1950s rink inside. They also had many Red tube lights on the wall above the rink as well. Not in parallel but each one in its own direction. Another A plus in design. The outside was just an ordinary compared to inside.
Funny thing, Dead-Rinks logo IS 1950s style font called Cherry Cream Soda font.
The Exterior.
The exterior showed how tall this Free-Span Steel Trusses Steel-Walled Warehouse - like Building with Gable roof. This is why it became a basketball center and now some fitness center.
