Rocket Skating Club sign. Old neon sign that was up for a long time and you can tell by color fading due to sun bleaching and rain wash. It lighted up beautifully at night. Source Henry Ford Museum. Taken in 1979.
Rocket Skating Club had a patch. It does look like it was unfinished art work because of the blended of rocket, skate, and wing on it. Almost no outlines. A vinyl decal would detail better. Source: Worthpoint.
The former Rocket Skating Club location. Taken in 2007, Destroyed by fire in February 2011. Demolished.
Rocket Skating Club 815 N. Virginia Ave, Oklahoma City, OK.
Rocket Skating Club was operational for at least more than 30 years. I do not know when they started or ended. It was well before 2011 fire. Because of the sign and the architecture, I would say from 1950s to 1980s. Maybe 1960s to 1990s. But the style of the building would place this around 1940s to 1959.
It was well known for wavy floor that was warped and the neon sign that was displayed outside.
After it was closed, it became storage facility but it was caught on fire in February 2011 and was ordered demolished.

The Exterior.
The exterior is unique because it display a décor that resemble a Mid-Century and not a Googie's. It is Mid-Century Modernist with Cubism. The lines horizontally and the lines vertical as well. It is the next step after Art Deco right into 1950's. It is way passed Art Deco though. They even have lines beyond lines especially on sides that were not common at the time but the center front of the building yes. But they have a twin "Monolith" instead of typically one and not two that are found at many Art Deco and Mid-Century as well as Googie Architectures. This is an attempt to revive Art Deco in Modernism in Mid-Century. I do not know what the original colors were but before its demolish, it was Dark Deep Red and Tan. That would be colors of much later era than 1950s. Too dark to be 1950s. I wish I could see what it was like when it was a rink.
I am sure it was attractive at the time when it was operational. Likely to match to the colors of the neon sign. Was it Fire Engine Red and True Blue walls? Anyone?
