Skateworld 28393 Seaford Rd, Laurel, DE. This is updated version (see two photos above) and it has murals on the wall. This time, it does look more lively. I love the look. Very simple yet, cute and functional for this size rink. The wall colors are exactly the same as you can see on the floor. It matches. And they have a tradition there-- the Starburst Lights with Mirror Ball in center. Can you see the fans? No air conditioning! Source: Skateworld.

Skateworld 28393 Seaford Rd, Laurel, DE (UP FOR SALE! STILL OPERATIONAL!)
Skateworld 28393 Seaford Rd, Laurel, DE (UP FOR SALE! STILL OPERATIONAL!)
Skateworld 28393 Seaford Rd, Laurel, Delaware was operational till this year, the year 2022. The couple who owned and operated opened Skateworld in 1980. The couple in question was Debbie and Richard Slatcher. Richard Slatcher passed away on 20 August 2021 leaving his widow to operate the rink but she is approaching 70 years of age in October 2022 and she decided to retire. There are four interesting parties tha wants to purchase but are they really rink operators? We will find that out soon enough. Stay tuned but in meantime, we thrive to inform you ahead of what is happening in Skating world, literally. for the rink Skateworld.
I pray the interested parties all do want to keep the rink as operational. Not to turn into something else which the pulic will see as it is "cold hearted" as it has done with some new operators of other rinks turning to ice rinks or warehouse or new housing.
Richard was the owner, coach and skating instructor at Skateworld in Laurel, DE. Sallie Morris is the most recent manager.
But before the couple owned in 1980, there was a roller rink in 1940s to maybe 1970s before it was Guida Clothing Company that owned the rink. Hence that architecture with the Segmental Arch roof. the front was quite different back then than you see today. It may have been addition in 1980. It was Robertson's Roll-Land.
In 1980s, it was said that the couple leased the building from the former Guida Clothing Company, Inc. and the rest made history.
So this means it was a rink then warehouse or sweatshop then back to rink. This story made more successful from being a rink to clothing warehouse then back to rink than it was with Mealey's Roller Rink in Allentown, PA which also became a warehouse for a clothing company then it did not return back to a rink. Instead Allentown bought the former rink building and demolished it to become a multistory 1960s Modernist multi-story city hall and police department and courtyard. (that profile will be up and running shortly).
The Interior.
This is a cute roller rink that is small rink and this layout of its size and the side of the rink has opening for seating, eating area, and concession stand. This rink reminded me of another rink I believe it is in Wyomning that it came back in business. They are rather small.
They still do not have Air Conditioning or AC or Air Con as some would call it. Still old fashioned with fan operating. That is quite rare for a rink that was opened in 1980. That was unusual considering at the time rinks saw a must using air conditioning. Of course, HVAC as well. This means cost more of course but in this world today, we sure do need AC. Or rather HVAC. HVAC means Heating, Venting, and Air Conditioning.
They may have add on in 1980 or before that because of the front appeared to be designed for that time.
Thank you so much Debbie for your service in the Skating Rink Industry! And thank you for the compliment about my website!
The Exterior.
The building appeared to be old. Was there another rink before this Skateworld? Yes, it was another rink before that! One might wonder. The building appeared to be Mid-Century, not 1980 because of the roofline was, of course, Segmental Arch. Might have Bow Arch Truss but I am not sure. It might. The frontage look newer and not matchable. It does look 1970s to me with that front. Mansard Roof designed with Steel Roof sheets to match with walls. All Sheet Metal with Ribs. The sides of course you can see it is Cinderblocks. The more recent times, according to Google, it is Chocolate Brown paint for the front walls, trims, and roof. Signage changed in early 2010s.
Yes, I was correct that this was built in 1940s' according to Debbie. I wrote the past paragaph before Debbie could answer back as I wrote this. It was a different rink name. The front was quite different back then. Even when in 1980, the front was entirely White with old logo of Skate World Inc.

For abandoned rinks, after you receive permission, do WEAR safety OSHA equipment including a safety glasses, pair of safety gloves, an orange vest or a jacket, and a construction helmet.
Thank you for understanding.
Dead Rinks is now International Roller Skating Rinks History Foundation© because many former names have become new names at the same rinks that are still active and due to much confusion, We have decided that International Roller Skating Rinks History Foundation© fits better for all rinks including defunct, closed, inactive, rebooted, and rinks that are still active today. For short on this site, it is International Roller Skating Rinks History© Bear with us as we change the entire site page by page each day. Thank you for understanding.
Second of all: The contents including words and photos above on this page and/or on any pages are purely educational entertainment purposes only. I provide what information from other websites, skaters, and operators and it may end up with different results between two (or more) sources. It is not our responsible for errors we caused. All sources are shown on each page. All opinions and statements of mine are also stated and are for purely educational entertainment only.
Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former. Since we are rebooted to allow alive rinks, active rinks, we welcome those active rinks as well. It will be described.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
