Courtesy of I miss Riverdale Roller World Facebook group. This was one of first photo of the sign when it was opening soon in 1978. Good picture taken in 1978! Wow!
Both photos Courtesy of Richard Young. Cleaned up by Dead-Rinks. (spots and scratches of photo were removed, mostly).
Courtesy of Richard Young. You can really see how it was built. Beautiful awning in zig zag style. Ah, nice Mercury Cougar! Appeared to be 1978 model. Ahh, I missed the styles!
Three photos courtesy of Richard Young. The rink, practice floor looking toward emergency exit, and looking FROM emergency exit wall.
Courtesy of Google Map. Noticed Forest Green steel walls? Yes, that was the former rink. The current tenant (if that was them ever since) expanded the building. The factory is in that section as the offices were up front. To buy back.. oh boy. Millions to convert.
Two photos courtesy of Richard Young. Noticed this was a brochure. It including the mailing section with return address and postage. This perhaps was printed in 1978 to 1980ish because those photos appeared to be when it was new. The fonts for the signs inside but also the logo on outside at the rink were very much 1970s look. A Balloon style font. There were a few but this was one kind. Specific, I do not know.
Three items courtesy of fans on I miss Riverdale Roller World Facebook group. Badge, Key chain, and ruler as well as a pencil. Great promotional items! You do not see like this anymore.
Courtesy of Ted Young. Real sad.
Riverdale Rollerworld 4 Manley Street, West Bridgewater, MA
This classy rink that does not allow blue jeans as it was advertised on their video, the Riverdale Roller World on 4 Manley Street, West Bridgewater, Massachusetts was truly a classy rink as I can see in the video, their photos. Truly showing this unique rink.
Actually this rink was second home to the original at Riverdale Roller World at 700 East Avenue, Warwick, Rhode Island which was cross the state line nearby. I know this is a duplicate somewhat but since it is another state, this is listed. Besides Riverdale Roller World in Massachusetts has its own story. And if any rinks moved to another state, it gets its own profile but always have link connecting.
Read about the Riverdale Roller World in Warwick first then come here...
This rink opened in 1978.
Anyway, its sad that this rink had to close. Beautiful design that lasted only 9 years. If there was not a problem, they would have today still operational for sure.
The history beyond the rink, well, It was sold in July 24,1987.
Today the total of the building with offices they added it is 51,817 Square feet but thanks to Realty Trac, it said 10 percent are offices. So, that brings down 5,181.7 Square Feet. Coming down to 46,635.3 Square feet of the former rink. It does not look right but that is what it says. I believe it was smaller as you can see old color photos. The bird view showed it was about 1/5th of new addition section connecting with the old rink building. That would be 20 percent.
UPDATE! -- 31 May 2022.
I received an email from Ted, who operated this rink and the results are quite different than what I received from Richard. Therefore, I do not want to hear any bitter between the two telling me two different stories. Therefore, the information between those two are OFF of this site. BOTH of their versions of history are controversal so again, this page has modified to remove both of their versions. Even the Facebook information posted by Ted Young was removed as well. ONLY I will explain the building history and the rink history itself, not about management nor operator/ownership bitter history. Please read the newly added disclaimer below. It is now going to be on every page. Give it time for it to be added on each page. but new profiles HAVE that disclaimer.
The other disclaimer on some profiles are for visiting former rink buildings. Now that is another story you read that below as well. Thank you for understanding.
The Interior.
The skating floor was particle board covered with blue Roll-On. The rink was totally designed by [Ted Young], and, as such was ready to receive a Tillinghast Rock Maple Rotunda as soon as the Corporation would allow it.
The color choice on the walls were very modern and contemporary for its time. With Blue as base half wall with Red stripe above it then White stripe on top of the Red followed by Taxi Yellow Stripe above the white upper walls. Very straight forward in cleanness of its design. It gave that crisp clean comfort.. the 3 Cs as I call that for architectural/interior design. This is the rink you would definitely want to be there to skate every Friday and Saturday night. They scored 3 out of 3.
What more good design there was they had a practice area. Rarely rinks had that. the original Riverdale Roller World in Rhode Island had that concept too. It did look bigger at that old site. See the profile of Riverdale Roller World of Warwick, Rhode Island.
It even had house plants in its planters between eating area and the rink itself. This appearance is similar to a rink in Florida which I do not recall the name of that rink and the 1970s Alive Rink called Bonaventure Rink (Plants removed since they renovated it). It is not there because it has been renovated. You can see the old photos of beautiful design in 1970s here. You see the orange of everything in that banner? That was the Bonaventure rink in 1970s.
The Exterior.
it was simple Free-Span Steel Truss White Cinderblocks and Steel colored Steel-Walled Warehouse - like Building with Gable roof. It was much higher ceiling clearance building. It had that 1950s style zig zag canopy in front of the building. It was two tones. The human height wall had white while rest were darker color. Still very clean design and simple too but the canopy makes it more stand out than many just-run-in-the-mill quick built Steel Truss steel-walled warehouses out there.
It is totally renovated into two story office building. They built the extension in 2002. It has 3.23 Acres according to RealtyTrac. Today it has Forest Green wall instead of Dark Cold Gray on Steel Sheet metals and Decorative Cinderblocks.
The Stats:
Rink Size: 90' x 190'. Floor: Particle Board with Blue Roll-On. and, as such was ready to receive a Tillinghast Rock Maple Rotunda as soon as the Corporation would allow it.
Floor Layout: Particle Board Later, Tillinghast Rock Maple Rotunda. Rink Designed: Ted Young.
Building Size: N/A. Built: N/A. Demolished: Year is unknown. Now a 2 story Cinderblock office building (Google Map)
Type of Building: Free-Span Steel Truss Cinderblocks and Steel-Walled Warehouse - like Building.
Roof: Gable.
Acres: 3.23 Acres.
Operated: 1980 to 1987.
Reason for Closure: I will not tell two different reasons due to two different answers from two sources therefore it is now as "Unknown"
Wanted: Information regarding exact dates of open/closed, why closed, size of rink, rink materials. Also photos. Anyone knows or have photos, please let me know by emailing at [email protected]. Thank you.
