Reeds Rolle Rink 4822 Gall Boulevard, Zephyrhills, FL. This photograph showed the evidence of Reeds Roller Rink sign that was uncovered on the side wall you can see on the right side of this photo. Uncovered recently. It is currently as an antique shop. Apparently this was a rink after all. Source: J.B.
Reeds Rolle Rink 4822 Gall Boulevard, Zephyrhills, FL. This photograph showed it was taken in 2018. The sign was hidden behind that paint on the wall as you can see. They must have discovered that part was a sign so they removed the paint like they did with the painting at the Sistine Chapel where Michelangelo and other paintings by Leonardo daVinci did. Reeds Rolle Rink 4822 Gall Boulevard, Zephyrhills, FL.
Reeds Rolle Rink was once a roller rink on 4822 Gall Boulevard, Zephyrhills, Florida. I am spelling it that way because of the sign did not have the "r" at the end of the word, "Roller" But actually it would be entire word.
The discovery recently showed the sign on the building when they were renovating for the antique shop that is opening up. It showed the words Reeds Rolle Rink with the missing r for Roller. But we all knew what.
It was put up for sale and sold in auction in 1959 leading to its sold by February 1959 in an auction.
UPDATES!
I got an email from the owner of an antique shop called, Box of Delights and Antiques which is currently occupying the former rink. She explained more detailed and wants to preserve this place! Please click the name so you can check it out!
My name is J.H. and I own Box of Delights and Antiques which was once Reeds Rolle Rink. I am able to fill in some blanks for you.
The building was constructed in 1953 and was originally approximately 4,500 sq ft . It has since had a bump out addition added to it for a his and hers rest room when it was made a vfw in the 70s.
Originally there was open air windows all around the building that were as well blocked in during the 70s.
I am strongly dedicated to protecting and restoring this building. I want to historically protect it and bring it back to its original build and would be happy to share my plans of you stop in.
Most importantly, I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Reeds' son one day when he saw the signage uncovered. He explained to me It was Mr. reeds first business and operated for many years until one day Mr. Reed met a young lady on the roller floor and ended up getting married to her. After that Mr. Reed went on to start a family and started a tree trimming business and closed shop with the roller rink.
Thank you,
J.H.
Wow, what a romantic story to read! Thank you so much J.H.! Beautiful story! Sounds like it should be made into a movie.
Here is another. Clereen, local historian had this information about Reed's Rolle Rink
Interesting! Reeds Rolle Rink was the one across from Shepard Park on Gall Blvd (across hwy. from boy scout and girl scout huts back in the day. It was a very popular rink as in the 50s-70s there wasn’t much else to do in Zephyrhills. I don’t remember who owned this rink and know there are a lot of Zhills folks who will know more about this than me. Vickie Lewis was one of the best skaters and I think she was the ref or whatever you call them to keep kids off the middle rope and help those who would fall [They are called "Floorguards" like "Lifeguards" is to swimming pools.] My sister and Vickie were best friends and it was like a second home to them😊. The Crystal Springs Roller Rink was popular for parties and groups.
The Interior.
J.B. said it was Maple floor with Tongue and Grove. This reminded me of another local rink nearby-- the Crystal Springs Skating Rink that Walter T. Curtis built. Similar style flooring. It made me wonder if it was Walter Curtis himself built this one as well. And as another rink he owned. Having just 4,500 SF, this was extremely small floorplan and this means with 20 percent less of that presents the roller rink. This means 3,600 SF of roller rink. That is quite small! Cant be right because I know someone's house with this square footage. And by seeing the photo. Cannot be right. I would have to be there to see! She invited me to come in to see anyway. Looks like a trip is in order!
Loop Net said 3,800 SF but the owner of this awesome shop said it was 4,500 SF with extension of adding new bathrooms. I believe Loop Net made this before updated. That is because Loop Net keep records of property from the town zoning. Every where for every commercial property. Sometimes they are outdated. I would have to be on the safe side by agreeing with the owner of the shop.
The Exterior.
It is a small building. Gabled roof Cinderblocks Storefront building.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A. Floor: Maple, non-painted. Floor Layout: N/A.
Building Size: 40' x 90'/3,600 SF (1959) 4,500 SF. (original) Built/Renovation: 1953/1960/1970s (to expand).
Demolished: Still standing. Now an antique shop.
Type of Building: Free-Span wood (?) Trusses Cinderblocks Storefront building.
Roof: Gable.
Acres: .045 AC. (19,800 SF)
Operated: (Overall)-- 1953 to February 1959. reopened February 1959 to c. 1976
Reason for Closure: Sold in auction in February 1959, bought by the sons of owners, then shut down in 1976. Drugs involved.
Wanted: Information regarding exact dates of open/closed, why closed, size of rink. Also more photos. Anyone knows or have photos, please let me know by emailing at [email protected]. Thank you.
