Redondo Skating Arena and Recreation Center
28201 Redondo Beach Drive S., Redondo Beach, WA
28201 Redondo Beach Drive S., Redondo Beach, WA
Redondo Skating Arena and Recreation Center was a very nice popular roller rink that was at Redondo Beach, Washington. it was a classic rink at the time before they had a fire in 1951. This rink was owned and operated by Weston and Lauree Betts and it was located on the beach called Redondo Beach which is in between Des Moines, Washington and Tacoma, Washington. It was located on 28201 Redondo Beach Drive South in Redondo Beach, Washington. It is today a series of condos/apartments buildings.
Before roller skating rinks started in the family, Weston was gathering some rice out of a 50 lb bag to cook, he bumped his head, and saw roller skates nearby. This is how he thought of a roller rink to operate at their recreational and dance hall.
They had it build sometimes in 1922 originally the amusement park and added this building as a recreational and dance hall. Before Weston Betts thought of roller rinks, Weston was gathering some rice out of a 50 lb bag to cook, he bumped his head, and saw roller skates nearby. This is how he thought of a roller rink to operate at their recreational and dance hall. so, the Betts began roller skating rink at their dance hall in 1936. They operated until they had a fire in January 1951.
This rink has a connection to other rinks because of the family who are or were very much involved in roller skating business throughout the past century.
Weston and Lauree Betts had three children. The oldest child was Evelyn "Evie" who married Carroll “Pat” Pattison. After the rink fire in 1951, Pat Pattison and Evie purchased Cooks Roller Rink in north Spokane, September 1951. North Division Rollercade, became known as Pattison’s North. They owned until 1974. At that time they sold the rink to their daughter Bobbie, and her husband Ben Winkler. The Winkler's owned and operated the rink for thirty-three years before retiring in 2006. Now Shaun and his wife Jericho are keeping the business in the family, running it with the same core values as Shaun's Grandfather. Shaun and Jericho Pattison purchased Pattison's North from their aunt and uncle on 01 September 2006. (Website)
The middle child, Byron Betts whom he married May Rogers. The couple designed and built Enchanted Village and Wild Waves in Federal Way, WA, an early theme park with the amusement rides that Weston and Lauree also operated.
The youngest, Barbara Betts who married Eric Englund. In 1961, they purchased what was to become The Everett Rollerfair in Everett, WA. Eric and Barbara built the Everett Skate Deck and moved the rink to a new location south of Everett.
The third and fourth generation (grandchildren and great grandchildren) of Weston and Lauree are still operating roller skating rinks in Washington State today. Those rinks are..
Pattison’s North Roller Skating Center Spokane, WA. (Still operational).
Skate Deck Everett, WA (DEAD-RINK).
Tiffany’s Puyallup, WA (DEAD-RINK due to fire).
Pattison’s West Federal Way, WA (up for sale according to October 2021 article).
Skagit Skate Burlington, WA. (Still operational).
(Note- I will be working on Skate Deck and Tiffany's shortly).
The Interior.
It was a beautiful large sized (likely the size of a NHL rink) Fan layout Maple wood non-painted floor with Free-Span Wood Trusses multistory building that was sitting on the beach overseeing the ocean.
It looked very airy and spacious interior with somewhat bit of low hung ceiling which made it feel like long. It was according to the photos from street level and bird view.
The Exterior.
I could not place what style architecture this rink building was. It looks like a fusion type of architecture. It would be Late Spanish Moderne style. A little bit of Art Deco because of that curved corner on one corner. That would be Streamlined as well as a lot of lines for windows horizontally. It is 1940s for 1950s architecture which was common in style back the day with manual drafting made easier with T-Square to draw up that but also because of Frank Lloyd Wright's popular Prairie design that caught on in first half of 20th Century that his disciples learned from such as John Lautner and others followed in Mid-Century Designs. It is a beautiful architecture. If it was not to be burned down, likely this would have been made as a Landmark status. Rarely a rink earn this status. About 2 or 3 rinks. That is it. One in New Orleans, another in Mid-west that I can think of right now.

Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
