Photo and logo courtesy of Razorback Roller Rink Facebook fan page. Beautiful art work. I actually almost felt they are really 3D. Just short of being more realistic a la SITE architectural style of design (See SITE).
Courtesy of Google Map. Photo taken in December 2008. Poor quality I know. Well, I adjusted by straighened and add more light to it as it was dark cloudy that day after it was slight snow fall (yes, you can see the ground!) This is a re-do photo made by Google because they took one really really sun glare that bleached their pictures. They still posted it though. Big mistake.
Courtesy of Razorback Roller Rink Facebook fan page. Awesome murals! Stay tuned as I try to remove the metal frame so you can see the murals better. hard work! You will see it in a day or two.. Stay tuned!
Razorback Roller Rink 2005 N 13th St, Rogers, AR
Razorback Roller Rink was a rink at 2005 N 13th St, Rogers, Arkansas kitty corner from a GLAD bags manufacturing plant. It was operating for a time till it closed around 2008ish. Then it was sold to become a church.
According to the person who runs the Facebook page on Razorback Roller Rink, [the rink] was built by Pat Williams in c. 1980 then Pat sold [the rink] to Bill Spurlock [Date unknown in 1980s]. Bill Spurlock sold to the Black Family in 1989. [Later,] the Black Family sold [the rink] to Moe Torobi in [around 1994 or 1995]. Not sure after Me Torobi sold it.
[The history with] skating continued non-stop since 1948 with the Lakeside Rink at Lake Atalanta until Razorback Roller Rink, LLC closed the rink at 2005 North 13th St, Rogers, AR and sold the building to FAITH BUILDERS FAMILY CHURCH about [December 19,] 2008. The church's website confirmed the month and year they bought the rink. That is 60 years of roller skating in Rogers, Arkansas. Sadly, no rink in that town. Many towns have suffered not having a rink and two states in the United States having no rinks either. I am sure many countries do not have rinks anymore. Sad.
My confirmation of educated guess on Google Map was right because the 2008 photo of the rink was still on Google Map but later, it showed it was a church. The church is still there.
This rink was very unique. To see the interior walls of interesting characters they painted. All red wild hogs here and there. I wish they had photos of all murals on the inside wall so I could use them. Anyone has those pictures of those murals?
The Interior.
It had Sky Blue painted Polyurethane coated Concrete floor rink but much of the walls, floor, and even rails were in Red Wild Hog colors of White and Red. Murals everywhere inside such as one I caught that was a cute couple of hogs facing each other and she was being coy. The other was a DJ right behind the DJ booth, the other was a birthday sign with a hog. Everywhere a hog! Sure a big mascot they used often at this rink. Like Mickey is to Disney, NBC Peacock is to NBC, and Aflac Duck is to Aflac, and Superman is to DC and Spiderman is to Timey Comics. You get the idea. I love mascots. This is a good one. Although this reminds me of ASU mascot of same color and similar concept.. the Red charging hog going from left to right. Same with the exterior. Of course, ASU is Arkansas State University so looked like the owner was a fan of ASU sports. I think this is first rink I worked on that has exclusively focus on a sports team mascot in same state they are from.
I love the colors inside. Well balanced with red and white and some black. The skate area and eating area/snack bar had Red-and-White laminated tiles. Easy to wash those floors after those spills! It also does give that classic 1950s look in that rink. Having said, this rink closed 12 years before I wrote this, it still look great and still look awesome in 2020! Too bad they are closed. I would have loved to visit this interesting rink. The interior does not have any what you say.. graffiti. ONLY one is outside.
They had large windows separating the rink and the rest of the floor. Did they played Roller Hockey there? It is tiled though. Not straight up. It does feel like ATC windows. ATC as in Air Traffic Control.
This rink had carpetiles and all were plain colors. Not like what they have today with many various of mixture of textures. That part did not match the rest of the place though. That was a record scratcher to me. Could have used red and white carpetiles.
I do not post interior pictures much because they focus on children in those pictures. To see them, check them out on Facebook. HOWEVER, see what I have for you to see! See above again. those murals!
Now it is all very modern looking 2000s look of Earth Tone Colors of Tans inside and out. With stone walls as well.
The Exterior.
It is Free-Span Steel Truss Steel-Walled Warehouse - like Building with Gable roof. The steel walls were painted white and it was very... interesting. It was not like that kind of graffiti I do not like. This was more of airbrushed mural as an art that their ASU mascot skated through the wall. It gave that 3D feel to it. It does look like it was coming out of the rink. I wish they had more effect like the old BEST department store inspired for this building. What I mean is that they could have had more 3D. Exposed wall with actual metal bend here and there.. with thick windows and in between all red things including a 3D printed model of the hog coming through the window. But never mind. This was good enough if they could not afford a budget for that.
They even had a large canopy for drive through to drop off people in the weather. Yes, they do get cold in Arkansas. In Google Map in 2008, frost was noticed on the ground.
Now all Earth Tone Color of Tan on the wall and they renovated so much that they even added second pair of doors in front. Perhaps that is where the offices are. Very 2000s look for the church.
