Both Courtesy of Google Map. This was the wrong location of the rink. The address pointed to this very corner building which was the wrong address. Thanks a lot Google and other sources got wrong address! The correct one is shown below. Photo below straightened. Very interesting logo. I love the concept of a skater with jet engine and a parachute. But the logo itself needed much work. The font.. It does look like some child painted it. no offense but it could have had some work. Thanks to computers, they could have used that and send it to a graphic artist or a sign maker to print or use vinyl cutter to make much nicer logo. By the way, when I first saw this logo, I have seen it somewhere before. I think I saw it online some time ago. But the building was demolished in 2008 making it up to that year.
Extreme Wheelz 310 North Cushing Ave, Kaplan, LA (Fake)
RAD Rollers 310 North Cushing Ave, Kaplan, LA
RAD Rollers 310 North Cushing Ave, Kaplan, LA
There is a mystery about this rink called Rad Rollers which was at 310 North Cushing Ave, Kaplan, Louisiana. From seeing on Google Map, wow, a small shotgun style storefront on a corner and I said to myself, "Is that it? after the Google map pointed to that location. I checked over again, same spot. Anyone know about this rink? It says it was a rink. But it would perhaps be the size of a very large living room to be a rink!
Then I had to look at this beautiful movie theater like building 2 doors down from that bar. There it is! The rink was there in that building. But the Zillow, Realtor, and Google Map had all the wrong location! Apparently Rad Rollers' real address was 312 North Cushing Ave. It is not my error. It is their errors!
At one point it did become Extreme Wheelz skating rink according to Yellow Pages.
Sadly that building was demolished. Why demolished? It had beautiful Art Deco look on the Brick building. You had to see the geometry forms of art on the building. It was a theater at that location. Actually a rebuilt theater.
You see, originally operated by the Joy Theatres chain, it was The Rio Theatre which opened by 1942 but on October 17, 1943, they had a fire which destroyed the theater. So,they rebuilt the theatre adn renamed it as Joy Theatre. Having done this, they closed their other Joy Theatre down the street (at 303 N. Cushing Avenue). Their seating was at 500. Eventually, the Joy Theatre closed on January 25, 1971 with the documentary “Cougar Country”. In July 1972 the floor was leveled and it became Vee’s five and dime variety store. (As for the documentary, it is not found on YouTube so it is not possible to find it).
The building finally became a roller rink. It was demolished soon after 2008.
What more strange was that Extreme Wheelz was established ON July 23, 2010! That was TWO yeas after the demolish. Something is very wrong.
The Interior.
I do not have information but the original theater burned down and the rebuilt had 500 seat theater that they ran for long time till they closed. The new owner leveled the floor and turned into a B-store (discount) and then it became RAD Rollers.
The Exterior.
I do not know what the original building was like but the newer one was very much of an Art-Deco style building with geometry design on the building above the canopy. Although you see in the photo, the bricks appeared different above the canopy than the bottom. Likely the bottom was redone to accommodate the discount store then later, the skating rink. It was a mis-matched bricks though. The under canopy was more of Red and White Bricks but the upper part was Soft Red with other color bricks designed featuring Art-Deco look
I am sure back the day it was very neat design including under the canopy. Did the theater had a marquee? Perhaps but it may have been removed. So far, I am aware that 5 or 6 theaters were converted to rinks. Seemly a few in Oregon and New York City regions with many theaters converted to a rink.
